Current Dropout Recovery Status(For students who
are not enrolled in school)
  • 17 ABE Program administered by Frank Logan,
    Career Education, provides a GED equivalency
    certificate after passing a test housed at
    Kensington and is grant funded by DESE.
  • 17 Fresh Start (also called Missouri Options)
    housed at Turner Middle Requires an entrance
    examination (TABE) and a high school diploma
    after passing a summative test.
  • 15 ACE housed at 5 sites provides 400 slots
    and a high school diploma to students who
    complete the SLPS required course work (also
    provides for 240 afterschool credit recovery
    slots at no cost at 4 locations).

Current Behavior Modification Status(Type I
discipline offenders)
  • High School students are housed in two buildings
    (one North and one South) with a third building
    for middle school students managed by an outside
    contractor.
  • SPED students are housed in a fourth location
    managed by an outside contractor.
  • Elementary students are housed in two elementary
    buildings (one North and one South) and staffed
    with in-house personnel. This was started in
    February.

Current Behavior Modification Status(Big Picture
Schools)(Originally developed for Type II
students)
  • Elementary housed at Des Peres which is slated to
    close. The enrollment is currently 64.
  • Middle housed at Turner Branch slated to close.
    The current enrollment is 67.
  • High School housed at Kottmeyer slated to close.
    The current enrollment is 84.
  • These are all in-house programs fully staffed by
    SLPS.

Proposed Dropout Recovery 2009-10
  • GED is grant funded at no cost to the district.
  • Fresh Start personnel cost and supplies estimated
    for 2009-10
    200
    students at a cost of 1,820,000.00.
  • ACE estimated for 2009-10
  • 400 Slots _at_ 5200 per slot 2,080,000.00
  • Continue ACE as is, but move the two closed
    locations to Roosevelt High School and Northwest
    High School. These moves allow credit recovery in
    those buildings plus Gateway and the Roberts
    building on Kingshighway.

  • The Type I in-house is designed to include
    social work and counselor interventions which
    were not inclusive of the contract in past years.
  • SPED Type I for 2009-10 for 50 slots at 6850
    342,500.00
  • Elementary for 2009-10 for 30 slots a cost of
    273,000.00
  • Big Picture for 2009-10 for 200 students at a
    cost of 1,374,100.00
  • Middle/ Senior students are housed in two school
    buildings (one North and one South) and staffed
    with in-house personnel. These sites will
    accommodate 400 students at approximately the
    same cost as our contracts.

  • Close Big Picture Elementary and combine the
    Middle and High into one location shared with
    another school Dropout Recovery.

Total Recommendations(2009-10)()
  • Eliminate the contract for Type I and move to two
    in-house locations. (One in the North and one in
    concert with the city in the South.) This
    combines middle and high school.
  • Continue the elementary in-house system as
    currently operating.
  • Close Big Picture Elementary and combine the
    Middle and High into one location shared with
    another school.
  • Restructure the In School Suspension Program
