Title: Lets Talk Rubrics

1
Lets Talk Rubrics
  • Sheila M. Bennett, Spring 2007

2
General Information
  • There are several excellent web sites that
discuss the definitions of a rubric, why use
rubrics, and the advantages of rubrics. One of
my favorites is the Teacher Vision site
  • http//www.teachervision.fen.com/teaching-methods/
    rubrics/4522.html?detoured

3
General Information
  • If you are looking for a good resource on
creating rubrics, this site from the Chicago
    Public Schools is excellent
  • http//intranet.cps.k12.il.us/Assessments/Ideas_an
    d_Rubrics/Create_Rubric/create_rubric.html

4
General Information
  • A rubric is not a form with boxes to check for
    satisfactory, unsatisfactory, etc.
  • A rubric is not a check list of criteria with
    ratings of 1 4.

5
General Information
  • A rubric contains unique criteria in rows and
levels or dimensions of those criteria in the
    columns.
  • Each cell in the matrix should contain a
description of that performance level for the
    criteria.

6
Sample Partial Rubric
7
Rubrics in LiveText
  • Rubrics in LiveText have the same content as any
    other rubric.
  • Rubrics we use to assess student work are part of
    documents called assessments

8
Rubrics in LiveText
  • You create an assessment by clicking create,
then choosing the LiveText folder, then
    assessments. Next, choose the template,
    Standards-Linked Performance Assessment
  • Do not create an assessment any other way.

9
Rubrics in LiveText
  • After you have created an assessment document, it
must be shared with the LiveText Administrator.
  • The LT Administrator will place the assessment
document into the TroyAdmin account and share it
will all the faculty who teach the course using
    that particular assessment.

10
Rubrics in LiveText
  • Assessment documents will arrive in your Inbox.
  • When you began assessing a students work, make
sure to look in your inbox when prompted for the
assessment you wish to use. (see PowerPoint
presentation on assessment on this web site)

11
How do you know you are using the correct
assessment?
  • After choosing the assessment from your inbox,
the author should be Troy University College of
    Education
  • If the author is not Troy COE, please contact me
immediately and I will share the correct
    rubric/assessment document (one exception--
    technology lesson plan rubric)

12
Rubrics in LiveText
  • Assessment documents with rubrics and student
documents created from templates are two separate
    parts of the LiveText system.
  • The students assignment and the assessment
document are connected when the faculty member
grades or assesses the students work.

13
Rubrics in LiveText
  • Upon completion of the assessment process, the
students assignment document and the facultys
assessment of that document are joined.
  • When the faculty member clicks save and submit
in the assessment document, the students work is
returned to them along with the assessment of
    that work.

14
Rubrics in LiveText
  • Assessment documents with rubrics are used for
    data collection
  • It is very important to always use the same
    assessment document
  • It is equally important for every faculty member
to use the same assessment document when
    assessing the same assignment.

15
Rubrics in LiveText
  • Data from rubrics you create in your own account
will remain in your account only.
  • In order for a rubric to be used in our
assessment system, it must be created as a
separate assessment document and shared with the
    LiveText Administrator

16
LiveText Reports
  • LiveText reports are generated from assessment
    rubrics.
  • Reports are interactive with the assignments.
For example, if 25 of students scored in the
deficient level of a particular criterion, the
viewer could click on that area and see a list of
    all students who scored deficient.

17
LiveText Reports
  • Additionally, the viewer could select a
particular student name and look at their
    assignment and assessment in detail.
  • This is why it is so important to assess student
work in LiveText and for students to complete
    their work in LiveText.

18
Sample LiveText Report
  • Clicking on the number brings up the students
    work.

19
Rubrics in LiveText
  • If you have questions about this process or
anything you have read in this presentation,
    please contact me, Sheila Bennett,

LiveText, view the help section of the LiveText
    web site.
