Title: Properties of Matter

1
Properties of Matter
  • Shane Feusier, Fortuna Union High School

2
What is Matter?
  • Why does it ???
  • Matter (he he)
  • All Matter has TWO properties
  • 1. Has a Volume (takes up space)
  • 2. Has Mass
  • Mass substance (until the next slide)

3
Mass
  • Measurement of the resistance to a change in
    motion
  • Resitance to change in motion is also known as
    INERTIA
  • Imagine a poodle sliding on ice

It is EASY to stop because it has little MASS
4
Mass
  • Imagine an elephant sliding on ice

It is HARD to stop because it has A LOT OF MASS
5
Do Not Confuse MASS with WEIGHT
  • Mass measures INERTIA, or the resistance to a
    change in motion
  • Weight equals the Force of Gravity on a Mass
  • MASS doesnt change, WEIGHT changes when on
    different planets / moons.

Concentration of Matter
  • Old Question Which weighs more a pound of
feathers or a pound of lead
  • Neither Each has a weight of 1 pound.
  • However, which one is more concentrated?
  • Lead it takes up less space

12
Concentration of MatterDENSITY
  • Density measures the concentration of a material.
  • It is a ratio---bigger the number, the more
    concentrated the material
  • Eg Water has a value of 1.0 g/mL
  • Lead has a value of 11.2 g/mL
  • Mercury has a value of 13.6 g/mL

13
Density Concentration
  • Density Mass / Volume
  • Units grams / milliliter
  • kilograms / meter3
  • Remember
  • Density Substance / Space

Specific Gravity
  • A unit-less measure
  • Compares the density of all materials to the
    density of water.
  • Specific Gravity Dsubstance / Dwater
  • Ex Dwater 1 g / mL 1000 kg/m3
  • Dgold 19.3 g / mL 1930 kg/m3
  • Specific Gravity of Gold is 19.3
  • (19.3 / 1 or 1930 / 1000)

21
Summary
  • All forms of matter have 2 properties
  • 1. Have Volume (take up space)
  • 2. Have Mass
  • Mass measures the Inertia of a body, which is the
resistance to a change in motion.
  • Weight measures gravitys effect on a mass
  • Density Concentration Mass / Volume
  • Specific Gravity unit-less density ratio
    compared with water S.G.water 1.00

22
Chemical Properties
  • Observed through a chemical reaction
  • New Compounds are formed
  • The Formula CHANGES
  • Chemical Equations are Used

23
A Chemical Property of Hydrogen
  • Hydrogen burns in Oxygen to form Water and Heat

2 H2 1 O2 ? 2 H2O Heat
Hydrogen Oxygen Water

24
A Chemical Property of Sulfur
  • Sulfur reacts with Zinc to form a Zinc/Sulfur
    compound and energy

Zn S ? ZnS Heat
Zinc Sulfur Zinc
Sulfide
25
Summary Chemical and Physical Properties
  • Physical Properties are identified without
changing the formula of the material
  • Ex density, color, MP, BP, crystal shape,
    solubility
  • Chemical Properties are identified through
chemical reactions and changing the formula of
    the material
