Title: Public Participation in Redistricting

1
Public Participation in Redistricting
  • Redistricting is the process of changing the
boundaries of school attendance zones, thereby
shifting the population of students to a
    different, or new school facility.
  • Every school system redistricts at one time or
another in order to balance student population
loads with the capacities of school facilities to
    adequately serve those populations.
  • The extreme growth in Onslow County, coupled with
the completion of many school construction
projects, makes redistricting necessary for the
2008-2009 school year, beginning in August 2008.
  • Public participation is a vital part of the
redistricting process. The Onslow County School
System appreciates your help in determining the
most appropriate attendance zones for our
    elementary school students.
  • Please note that no middle school or high school
attendance boundaries are under consideration at
    this time.
  • Maps are available at every elementary school
which might be affected under one or more of the
    redistricting options currently being considered
by the school system. In addition, maps may be
accessed through the Onslow County Public Schools
    website at www.onslow.k12.nc.us.
  • Public comment will be received by the school
system in both written and oral form through
January 11, 2008. Instructions for submitting
comment are given on the back of this handout.
  • The current timeline for redistricting proposes
that a decision be made during February 2008 to
be effective for the 2008-2009 school year.
