2Introduction
Following are the basic safety principles upon
which a Safety Program must be founded
- Safety is a management responsibility.
- Managers / supervisors must be held accountable
for their groups performance. - Safety performance must be accurately measured.
Furthermore, this measurement must be proactive. - The highest level of performance a supervisor can
expect from the people he/she supervises is
determined largely by his/her minimum acceptable
standards. - The organization must do whatever is necessary to
ensure the safety and well being of its
employees. - Safety is a requirement, not an option.

8Training - Education
Personal invitation
- Personal training with fire extinguisher and
fire theory (groups of 25 people), duration ½
day. - Basic training in SST, duration ½ day.
- Complementary course I (Chemical hazards)
- Complementary course II (Biological hazards)
- Complementary course III (Electrical hazards)
- Complementary course IV (Cryogenic and laser
hazards) - Complementary course V (Radioprotection hazards)
- Specific training of chef de bâtiment et safety
delegates. - Specific training of unit directors.

9Support
- Support service to units and collaborators.
- Connecting service with EPFL central services and
external for SST matters. - FSB internal and external communication in case
of information and events related to SST matters.
10Communication
- SST service will be the official FSB
communication office for events or particular
situations related to SST matters.
11Events management
- Emergency intervention in case of safety events,
24h service. - Posteriori event management and correctives
measured in relation to the event will be the
duty of the SST service. - A minor and major accident notification database
(annonce dévénement) will be implemented and
accessible on the intranet. Learning tool.

12Controls
- Responsibility ? lab or unit directors.
- Safety prize, reward.
- SST service will perform regular unit visits and
inspections twice a year. - An internal or external safety audit, will be
performed in every institute bi-annually. - In case of emergency, or severe or repeated
violations, the lab will be closed for a period
defined by the FSB board. Reopening would be the
decision of the faculty board and SST service.
13Some simple COMPULSORY rules
- Respect the directives and always wear
(chemicals) - Protective glasses or goggles (for everyone)
- Protective blouse
- Long trousers
- Closed shoes, no sandals
- Specific protective gloves
- The lab door is always closed
- Leave free the emergency exits
- No food or drink in the lab
