Science Fair
  • Helping Students Do Science

Revision 091908
3
5 Parts of a Science Project
3. Write report
2. Do experiment keep journal
4. Make Abstract
5. Create presentation board
1. Plan experiment
4
Scientific Method
An experimental way to test an idea
Plan your experiment to include variables constan
ts controls hypothesis experiment data conclusion
5
Choosing a Topic
Menu Style
What is the effect of __A__
variable
on __B__
subject
measured by __C__
units
when __D__ is constant
Students fill in the blanks from lists
6
Choosing a Topic
There must be something to measure
  • Variables to be measured might include
  • irrigation / drought
  • more mass / less mass
  • angle of launch
  • sunlight / dark
  • color of light
  • pH
  • type of substrate
  • Kinds of measurements
  • length / height
  • color change
  • speed / velocity
  • time
  • mass
  • volume
  • use numbers

7
Constants
Are things that stay the same because
You hold them constant
So only 1 variable is tested at a time
Light speed 600 million mph Water boils at 100
F
They are physically invariant
8
Variables
0
Are things you manipulate
Things that change in response
1
4
Manipulated weight on car Observed distance
traveled
9
Controls
  • Are things to which you compare your results
  • Negative Control (untreated) In comparing which
    toothpaste works best it is
  • Positive Control (treated with something known to
work very well) In determining which color
light makes plants grow better it is

Not brushing your teeth
Sunlight
10
N
  • N is the number of times you test something
  • N should be 3 or more.
  • Conclusions drawn from only one trial are usually
    incorrect.

11
Why Repeat Experiments ?
Which Rots Faster Potatoes or Tomatoes ? If N1
itsTomatoes, If N 3 its Potatoes
12
Hypothesis
An educated guess
The crystals will be smaller when evaporation is
faster
The soil temperature will not affect plant
growth
positive action - negative action - no action
13
Paperwork
  • Your school decides to participate in the
Coriell Science Fair and you let Dr. Butler know.
  • Students complete
  • Student Checklist (1A) Research Plan
  • possibly others from the Intel ISEF rulebook
  • Teachers review project proposals sign
  • Checklist for Adult Sponsor (1)
  • Students parents must sign top part of
  • Approval Form (1B)
  • Teachers send forms to Coriell for review

Paperwork Review
  • Form 1 (Checklist for Adult Sponsor)
  • Form 1A (Student Checklist)
  • Research plan and attachment
  • Form 1B (Student Parent signature form)
  • any other forms needed (humans, animals,
    hazardous, controlled substances)
  • Teachers send paperwork to Coriell for approval
    and keep a copy
  • Forms will be kept on file (and not returned).
  • A Green evaluation sheet will be returned to
you, and you must correct deficient forms and
    re-send to Coriell
  • Dont begin your experiment until you have

Do your Experiment
  • Got your paperwork back from Coriell ?
  • Keep all original papers with project, send only
    copies
  • Repeat observations
  • Take photos
  • Keep notes in a journal
  • engineers should build and test a prototype
  • one variable at a time

34
Data Collection
  • Write everything down in a log book
  • Use a new page per day
  • Keep everything in one original book
  • Make tables of numbers

35
Write a Report
  • Title page, table of contents
  • Introduction, hypothesis
  • Experiment, materials methods
  • Data and discussion
  • Conclusion
  • Acknowledgments
  • References

36
Abstract
  • Short (250 words or less) one half page typed
  • Purpose Why you did the
    experiment
  • Procedure How you did the
    experiment
  • Data What you
    found out
  • Conclusions What you learned from the
    experiment
  • Send 1 copy to Coriell when project completed
  • Bring at least 12 to fair to place by poster
  • Do not put LAST name or SCHOOL name on abstract
  • Do include TITLE of experiment at top of abstract
  • Mount 1copy of abstract on the backboard

37
Create Backboard
  • Self Standing
  • Be creative
  • Communicate project
  • Neatness Counts
  • Logical Presentation
  • Use color texture
  • Large type for legibility
  • Credit graphs/photos

38
Common Problems
  • Student Checklist Form 1A
  • (6) Actual start date filled in and / or
project started before project was approved by
Coriell SRC or a Regulated Research Institute
    (Form 1C) SRC
  • Approval Form 1B
  • (1) Risk rule acknowledgment not signed or
    checked
  • (2a) Appropriate person has not signed SRC
    approval
  • Qualified Scientist Form 2
  • Adult sponsor / Designated Supervisor lacks
    qualifications to ensure safety
  • Risk Assessment Form 3 Research Plan
  • Insufficient Safety Facilities e.g. Once
inoculated, bacterial plates cant be opened
anywhere other than a BSL-2 facility due to
    potential MRSA outgrowth
  • Human Subjects Form 4
  • Absent For anything other than anonymously
observing from a distance, form 4 is needed.
  • Submitting informed consents with paperwork
    (Confidential on request only)
  • Justification for waiver of informed consent is
    a re-statement of risk factors, not a
    justification for waiver

39
TITLE
40
Graphs
  • need a title (and perhaps a subtitle)
  • legend or key for pie graphs
  • label axes, with units and regular divisions
  • select colors that are easy to see

Photographs should have a caption. Photos must
have a credit line giving origin. It is better to
take your own photos, rather than copy
illustrations.

Display Safety
  • Be considerate of others
  • Keep display within size limits (30 inches
deep, 4 feet wide, 9 feet tall from floor)
  • Do not bring liquids, sharp objects
  • Follow ISEF safety regulations
  • Use photographs rather than objects whenever
    possible
  • Save cell phone calls for outdoors, turn phone
    off indoors
