13Hurricanes Make a Plan
- Find out how vulnerable you are to hurricanes.
- Know your storm surge/evacuation zone and flood
zone. - Decide on a safe place to go.
- Plan on what to do with your pets.
- Identify local evacuation routes.
- Make a list of items to bring inside in the event
of a storm.
14Special Considerations for Caregivers
- Identification bracelets, necklaces and current
photos - Personal Medical Records
- Let others who are outside the affected area know
your plans and give them your contact information
as well as identifying information on your client

- Make sure someone else has copies of medical
records, medications and physician information - Backup eyeglasses and/or hearing aids
- Comfort Items
- Extra Supply of Routine Medications and Rescue

- Control the Environment as Much as Possible
- TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF TOO!!
17Evacuation
- If instructed to evacuate, families should -
- Know of you are in an evacuation zone.
- Call their out-of-state contact to tell him/her
where they are going and what you are doing. - Turn off electricity at the main breaker and the
main water valve. - Lock and secure the home and leave as soon as
possible. - Take your family disaster supplies kit.
- If you are in an evacuation zone, this is the
time to go.
18Afterwards. . .
- Return home only when officials say it is safe.
- Stay tuned to local radio for information.
- Avoid loose or dangling power lines.
- Enter buildings or homes with extreme caution.
- Wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing,
including long sleeves and long pants. - Beware of snakes, insects or animals that may
have been driven to higher ground. - Be sure not to drink water tap until officials
indicate that it is safe to do so.
