• Born 1820 on a plantation in Bucktown, Maryland
• (Dorchester County)
• Death March 10, 1913
• Parents Ashanti Tribe of West Africa

CHILDHOOD (1820-1835)

• Age 5 hired out as a house servant
• Age 7 ran away from home, returned (no food and
  loneliness)

• Age 15 Harriet tried to help a runaway slave
• She went into a coma. She had blackouts the rest
  of her life.

CHILDHOOD TREATMENT

• Whipping as a part of her morning routine
• Harriet put on thick
• clothes to protect her
• skin. She made a loud
• cry as each blow would
• strike her.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

• 1849 Harriet escaped in fear of being sold.
• North Star to Freedom Harriet hid during the
  day, and she followed the North Star at night.

ROUTE TO FREEDOM

• of straw or vegetables.

MOSES OF HER PEOPLE

• 19 dangerous trips back to the south using the
  Underground Railroad, leading more than 300
  slaves to freedom.
• General Tubman Harriet worked as a spy and a
  scout for the Union Army. She also served as a
  nurse and a cook.
