4Context for ISO 8000
- scope
- information data management process
- input data
- assessing quality
- process
- generates, collects, transforms, retains,
retrieves, disseminates and disposes - building quality in
- output data
- assuring quality
- "as is" to "to be" transformation of the process
- "as is" current problems
- "to be" the solutions that the standard will
provide - includes the "meta" level of how to deploy the
standard - risk, maturity
- applicability of the standard
- across the life cycle (concept to disposal)
- across the extended enterprise (including
acquirer supplier) - for all agreement (contract) types
- all parts of the system
5Information data management process
- see ISO 15288
- the information life cycle
- collection (gathering)
- embedding in other processes
- collation (creating data sets)
- verification
- configuration management
- use
- etc.
6Data quality perspectives
- "technology" versus "management"
- "management"
- e.g. education training
- task specific (including software operation)
- the broad data quality perspective
- "requirements on organization" versus
"requirements on data" - "requirements on data" current focus of Part
110 - pragmatism of ISO 8000 certification
- quick, simple, low cost
- Small to Medium Enterprises
- people, process technology
- people covers education training, behaviour,
organization culture - process issues including simplification (removing
unnecessary inappropriate complexity lean?)
systemization (automation optimization), waste,
inflexibility variability - "enterprise interfaces" (data exchange sharing)
versus "internal to organizations" ("public
process" versus "private process")?
7Business effects of information data quality
- safety
- regulatory compliance (legal, environment etc.)
- operational availability
- brand image
- operational effectiveness
- operational efficiency
- duration
- financial
- cost
- profitability
- return on investment
- appropriate cost allocation
- risk reduction
- partnering relationships
- roles responsibilities
- trust
- mutually beneficial incentives (e.g. quality
improvement profit guarantee) - many of these are both internal (business
processes) external (products delivered to
customers)
8System life cycle processes
- agreement, enterprise, project
- policy
- strategy
- planning
- decision making
- contracts
- performance management
- etc.
- technical
- maintenance
- purchasing
- supply chain
- design
- manufacture
- catalogue master data management
- etc.
- see ISO 15288 for a complete
- all these processes are supported enabled by
the information management process
9Data issues
- absolute requirements for exchange, sharing
archiving - identified specified syntax (is the data
readable?) - identified specified semantics (is the data
understandable?) - (is the data useful?) dependent on "customer"
(stakeholder, user, system life cycle process)
requirements (significance impact of the
intended use or purpose of the data) - correctness
- completeness (against a specified list of
required elements) - accessibility
- indication of context
- timeliness
- accuracy
- provenance (traceability)
- trust confidence
- availability
- visibility
- precision
- fidelity
10Terminology issues
- data quality
- information quality
- product data quality

- action list
- any other business
13Scope (proposal)
- SC4 Working Group 13, Industrial Data Quality
will - recognize that all existing SC4 standards
contribute to assuring industrial data quality
therefore will - develop fundamental principles on data quality
covering the scope of the SC4 standards - build appropriate relationships between WG13
standards the standards of other SC4 working
groups - propose develop an ISO 8000 series of standards
any other appropriate new standards that
address industrial data quality, potentially
including data quality activities,
characteristics testing - by reviewing proposals providing requirements
for new SC4 standards or revisions to existing
standards, help to maintain consistency among SC4
standards in providing a capability to address
industrial data quality - clarify then disseminate the terminology
applicable to industrial data quality, including
addressing the relationship between the terms
"data quality" "information quality" - develop standards that complement, are consistent
with do not conflict with ISO 9000 any other
ISO standard that address quality.

teleconference calls
18The history status of ISO 8000
- in 2005-11, the NWI established
- a title "Catalogue Management Systems"
- a scope (detail of the above)
- a list of Parts (to support the above)
- in 2006-03, consensus
- ISO/TC184/SC4 to put a broader range of Parts
within ISO 8000 - "the ISO 8000 series"
- in 2007-03
- title of original NWI is now inadequate for both
- the broader series, and
- the intended original scope (intention to use
"Master Data" instead of "Catalogue") - scope of original NWI is too narrow for the
broader series - therefore WG13 will need to submit NWI for new
Parts - current Parts
- Part 001 (Overview)
- working draft covers the intended broader scope
of ISO 8000 - Part 002 (Terminology)
- Committee Draft covers the requirements for
Master Data - however, the position
19The title of ISO 8000
- ISO required title format
- ltintroductory elementgt ltmain elementgt Part
ltpart numbergt ltpart titlegt - current drafts
- Part 002
- Data quality Terminology
- Part 110
- Master data quality Syntax, semantic encoding,
and conformance to customer needs - issues
- missing part number from title
- missing introductory element
- all current ISO/TC184/SC4 standards use
"Industrial automation systems integration" - ISO/TC184 is likely to change to "Automation
systems integration" - the ISO Supplementary Directives indicate that
this is optional - need for an ISO 8000 series title (the main
element) - "information quality" rather than "data quality"
remains potentially contentious - proposal (decision not to use introductory
element) - Part 002
- Information quality Part 2 Terminology
- Part 110
20WG13 plans
- explore scope of full ISO 8000 series
- discuss draft of ISO 8000 Part 001 by e-mail
- hold industry requirements workshop at Ibusuki
meeting - discuss Concept of Operations document by e-mail
- establishing the groundwork for a broader ISO
8000 series - update to Supplementary Directives to cover ISO
8000 - e.g.
- suitable template wording for Introductions
21ISO 8000 plans
- Part 001 Overview
- for time being, keep as a discussion document for
WG13 - Convener to send next update to the WG13 e-mail
exploder - Part 002
- change title to "Information quality Part 2
Terminology" - update draft document based on Convener Review
- issue for ballot before 2007-04-30
- this Part will be the terminology for the whole
series - each NWI to cover new Parts
- Part 110
- change title to "Information quality Part 110
Master data quality Syntax, semantic encoding,
and conformance to customer needs" - update draft document based on Convener Review
- issue for ballot before 2007-04-30
22Ibusuki workshop call for presentations (1)
- WG13 jointly with JNC (Japan National Committee)
for SC4 will hold a Data Quality Workshop
during the next IBUSUKI meeting. Outline of the
workshop is as follows. - ltDate and Timegt
- Wednesday, 4th of July, 1300 1700
- ltPurposegt
- ISO 8000 currently applies to Master Data Quality
and in order to define extensions to address the
wider problem of Data Quality, it is necessary to
understand the following - Industry view (experiences of deployment of data
quality related standards and requirements based
on those experiences) - Vendors view (experiences of checking and
healing production-level industry data and
requirements based on those experiences) - Existing standards or activities that are related
to industrial data quality - The workshop will consist of three blocks of
presentations by experts. Each block will address
one of the topics above.
23Ibusuki workshop call for presentations (2)
