1The Office of Community Development
- The Office of Community Development (OCD) works
closely with campus units and community partners
to develop, conduct, evaluate, and generate
funding for community programs. These include
recreation, healthcare, economic development,
entrepreneurship, and community development
programs. OCD is also responsible for project
management of the Tuscaloosa Consortium for
Higher Education, The Neighborhood Partnership
Committee, and The Tuscaloosa Ministerial
Alliance Faith-Based Initiatives.

3Parks and Recreation Baseball Summit
- A Black Belt Parks and Recreation Summit was held
at the Bryant Conference Center on November 16,
2006. - The partners for the project included the Black
Belt Action Commission, Black Belt Community
Foundation, Greene-Sumter - Enterprise Community, Local Recreational Leaders,
Engineering Students and CCBP Staff - Park Directors from Demopolis, Livingston, and
Selma shared success stories with all
participants. - Participants left campus knowing who to talk with
and where to look for funding for recreational
needs.

7Clinical Translational Science Project
- The University of Alabama Institute for Rural
Health Research received a planning grant to
prepare a proposal for a Clinical Translational
Science Award. This award would be utilized to
study health disparities in the Alabama Black
Belt Region. - This research effort focuses on moving biomedical
and laboratory science more quickly and
efficiently to patients and communities. - Community Partners participated in a Retreat on
January 8, 2007 at the Bryant Conference Center. - CCBP Staff and Institute for Rural Research Staff
participated in community forums during the month
of March in Sumter, Macon, and Dallas counties. - Community Partners include Black Belt Community
Foundation Associates, Sumter County Health and
Wellness Center, Whatley Health Services, UAB
Reach 2010, Sponsors of the Defiant Run of Selma,
AL.
8Minority Business Forum
- The University of Alabama hosted a Minority
Business Forum at the Bryant Conference Center on
March 28, 2007. - More than 100 minority owned business leaders
participated in discussions with University
employees on How To Do Business With The
University of Alabama. - The forum consisted of two general sessions,
three breakout sessions, and a networking
reception. The breakout sessions were in the
areas of Construction, Goods and Services, and
becoming a Bama Cash Vendor. - This was a partnership between Community Affairs,
Financial Affairs, and South Regions Minority
Business Council.

12Black Belt 100 Lenses Project
- The 100 Lenses Project is an initiative of the
Black Belt Community Foundation in partnership
with volunteer community associates, residents of
the Black Belt, CCBP Staff, and students from The
University of Alabama Creative Campus. - This project is conducted to raise awareness at
the local, state, national and world levels about
the issues and concerns facing the residents of
the Black Belt. - The Photo-voice methodology will be utilized by
residents of the Black Belt to define for
themselves and others what is worth remembering
and what changes need to be made in the region. - A pilot program will be conducted in rural Sumter
County before this initiative is spread into the
other eleven Black Belt counties.

14Engineering Students Without Borders
- The University of Alabamas Chapter of
Engineering Students Without Borders has formed a
partnership with the local health department in
Hale County and the Hero Center to replace old
water lines and sewage lines for needy families
in rural Hale County. - The ESWB has formed a partnership with CCBP and
local government officials in Hale County to
revitalize Smith Park in Greensboro, AL. - The group has already made significant
improvements to the basketball playing area and
softball facilities to include improvements to
benches and dugouts. - The ESWB has also agreed to assist the Sumter
County Board of Education Technology Department
with computer repair services and maintenance.

18Rural Baseball Initiative
- The rural baseball initiative seeks to involve
at-risk youth from Alabama Black Belt Counties in
organized baseball programs. - Partnerships are being formed with local cities,
towns, and recreational groups to promote
baseball across the entire State of Alabama. - CCBP staff members have linked the rural baseball
initiative participants with representatives from
the Alabama Negro League Association. - Youth participants and coaches will have an
opportunity to meet with former Negro League
players and to tour Rickwood Field located in
Birmingham, Alabama. - Plans are being made for Black Belt youth to play
at historic Rickwood Field in July 2007.
19Engineering Academies in Rural Black Belt School
Districts
- The CCBP is working in partnership with the
Sumter County Board of Education and The
University of Alabama College of Engineering to
develop engineering academies in the Alabama
Black Belt School Districts. - A strategic planning meeting is scheduled for
June 15, 2007 on the campus of The University of
Alabama to discuss the roles of all the
participants in this initiative. - Sumter County High School and Livingston High
School have been designated as the pilot schools
in the Black Belt. - The University of Alabama College of Engineering
will submit a GK-12 Proposal to the National
Science Foundation in July 2007which includes the
development of Engineering Academies across the
Alabama Black Belt over the next five years.
20Farmers Market Project
- Homegrown Alabama is a student-led group that
educates the community about the value of local
produce. - Partners for the Homegrown Alabama Farmers Market
Project are the University of Alabama Office of
Community Affairs, Ferguson Center, Bama Dining,
and the Alabama Farmers Market Authority. - Farmers from Northport, Tuscaloosa, Duncanville,
Coker, Fayette, Thorsby, Clanton, and others from
around the state of Alabama were invited to
participate in this project. - University of Alabama students enrolled in
Nutrition and Hospitality Management 490 were the
planners of the Homegrown Alabama Farmers Market
Project. - More than one thousand persons from the
University of Alabama campus community
participated in the Farmers Market held on campus
on May, 3, 2007 beginning at 300 p.m.

- The CCBP AlabamaREAL program has partnered with
the Sumter County Board of Education and Children
of the Village to enhance the business and
journalism skills of students in rural Sumter
County. - During the spring 2007 semester, a UA team of
journalism students worked with Sumter county
students on the project - A 5,000 SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) grant
was obtained that will allow a team of UA
Business School students to work with the project
during the 2007-2008 academic year, including
some support for project materials

- The CCBP AlabamaREAL program partnered with the
Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business
Administrations 2007 Capstone Business Academy - Five students from targeted Black Belt counties
were selected to receive scholarships to attend
the Academy - The Academy is a ten-day residential event that
attracts students from around the country and
includes the opportunity to interact with UA
professors, business professionals and other
students. - The Academy includes recreational opportunities
and a 4-day trip to Atlanta to tour businesses
such as Coca-Cola, UPS, and Cintas - Continued partnership with the Academy is
anticipated as well as additional scholarship
opportunities for students to attend
