  • THE PRODUCTS
  • TASK 1 ACADEMIC ESSAY
  • TASK 2 ACADEMIC PAPER

12
  • TASK 1 THE ACADEMIC ESSAY
  • Product of Unit 2
  • A documented essay based on a reading pack
  • The broad topic is Justice Injustice
  • Around 800 words
  • The aims
  • To give them practice in writing a full
    documented academic essay
  • To warm up students
  • To get students to brainstorm on the topic for
their later extended piece of work

13
  • The Task
  • Reading packs will be used as materials to be
    cited
  • An argumentative or expository essay
  • Process
  • Sts choose their reading pack
  • Vocabulary quiz
  • Documentation form
  • Outline
  • First Draft
  • Final Draft
  • !!! All stages of the process to be assessed

14
  • TASK 2 THE ACADEMIC PAPER
  • 40 of their final grade
  • 2000-2500 words
  • The product of Units 3, 4 and 5
  • Feedback at each and every stage
  • A sample paper in Unit 4 and 5 and one in App.6
  • !!! All stages of the process to be assessed

15
  • The Task
  • Has two main parts
  • part 1 a review of literature on a topic
    about justice/injustice, 750 to 1000 words
  • part 2 argumentation which requires Sts to
take a stand on the same topic and to persuade
audience on the validity of it, 750 to 1000 words
  • an introduction and a conclusion (each
    around 200 words)

16
  • Why this task?
  • A more real-life task (one first does research
and then forms an opinion regarding the topic),
    more meaningful
  • Sts will exercise the two most common types of
discourse in the academic writing in the same
    paper
  • Sts will do research once and write the
informative and persuasive parts of the essay
    depending on the same research
  • More like process-writing, they will work on the
same topic throughout the semester and learn
    about a topic in depth

17
  • The Academic Paper
  • I. Introduction
  • Introduce the subject
  • Give background to the subject and mention what
we know about the topic already and what is not
    known yet
  • State the research question explicitly

18
  • II. A Review of Literature
  • Identify arguments of the previous studies on the
subject in question, i.e. how the question has
    been answered by different authorities
  • Create several categories and put the arguments
of previous studies into these categories (e.g.
those in support of a particular position, those
    against, and those offering alternative
    solutions.)
  • Explain how each opinion/answer is similar to and
    how it varies from others.
  • Evaluate these sources in terms of the extent of
their contribution to the understanding and
development of the area of research.

19
  • III. Argumentation
  • The first paragraph will be a transition
between the review of literature and
argumentation. It should have a clear
    argumentative thesis statement,
which should state the stance taken.
  • Try to convince audience that the
argument is right. To do this, there should be
counter arguments, which must be refuted
    effectively.

20
  • IV. Conclusion
  • Restate the research question and the most
    significant findings in the literature.
  • Restate your argumentative thesis statement and
    your main supports.
  • Make use of one or more conclusion techniques,
e.g. recommending a course of action, warning, or
    making a prediction etc.

21
