The Goal of World Language Instruction
  • To enrich the lives of students
  • by exposing them to the study
  • of cultures via language, art,
  • music, geography, and history.
  • To increase students ability to
  • communicate in the target
  • language.
  • To begin to prepare students
  • to live, interact, and compete
  • in our global society.

New Jersey ranks 8th among states in terms of
exports.
One in 6 new jobs created flows from
international trade.
New Jersey is home to more than 1,200
multinational firms from 40 countries.

Increased diversity in New Jersey requires
greater understanding of the myriad of cultures
present in our state in order to learn and work
respectfully across cultures.

World Languages
A Core Curriculum Subject
  • Courses provide a sequence of language study,
  • with each level building upon foundation
  • established in previous level.
  • Students take at least a two year sequence of
    same
  • language in high school.
  • Continued study of language encouraged to
    attain
  • greater proficiency in the target language.
  • The longer the sequence of study, the
    greater the level of
  • proficiency attained.

  • COLLEGE Students are encouraged

LEVEL 1
  • For students beginning a new language or those
    who
  • may need additional reinforcement before
    continuing
  • to Level 2.
  • Emphasis on listening and speaking
  • Simple readings and some writing
  • Target culture forms backdrop for instruction.

Level 2 Academic
  • For students who successfully complete their
    language
  • study in middle school and wish to continue
    to study that
  • same language in high school.
  • Instruction will continue to build upon
    language skills of
  • speaking, listening, reading, writing, as
    well as the study
  • of culture.

Level 2 Accelerated
  • Highly motivated students who have
  • achieved great success at the middle
  • school level.
  • More creative and spontaneous with the
  • language.
  • Pre-AP instruction is begun at this level.
  • Grammar takes on a more important role.

  • Marking period grades
  • 7th grade, marking periods 3 4

  • Teacher recommendation based on following
  • Students initiative
  • Students interest and enthusiasm

Honor Society Criteria
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT Minimum grade of A-
(90-92) in Accelerated level or A (93-96) in
Academic level AND Minimum grade of A-
(Accelerated) or A (Academic) in PREVIOUS year of
language study.
SECONDARY CRITERIA Minimum 2-year study of
same language Commitment to continue to study
language to highest level offered Membership
in language club and completion of minimum of 4
club activities.
