What?
  • In English we have two present tenses
  • The simple present.
  • The present continuous.

How?
  • To be verb(ing)
  • I go. gt I am going.
  • You say. gt You are saying.
  • He thinks. gt He is thinking.
  • We fight. gt We are fighting.

Why?
  • As you learned last week, the simple present
    shows 1. Repeated activities 2. Facts and
    generalizations.
  • I brush my teeth.
  • Cats like milk.
  • The present continuous is different.

Use 1 Things happening NOW
  • Use the Present Continuous to express the idea
    that something is happening now, at this very
    moment. It can also be used to show that
    something is not happening now.
  • You are learning English now.
  • You are not swimming now.
  • I am sitting.
  • I am not standing.
  • They are reading their books.

Use 2 Near Future
  • Sometimes, speakers use the Present Continuous to
    indicate that something will or will not happen
    in the near future.
  • I am meeting some friends after work.
  • I am not going to the party tonight.
  • Is he visiting his parents next weekend.
  • Isn't he coming with us tonight.

Questions Present Continuous
  • Reverse the subject and the verb to be.
  • You are playing soccer.
  • Are you playing soccer?
  • He is studying for the test.
  • Is he studying for the test?

Passive Voice
  • To be being past participle
  • He is glaring at the teacher.
  • The teacher is being glared at by him.
  • She is drinking the coffee.
  • The coffee is being drunk by her.
