Lesson Objectives
  • In this lesson we will-
  • Discuss the process of recruiting
  • Look at recruiting documents such as application
    forms, letters of application CVs
  • Try drafting a CV
  • Investigate legal aspects of recruiting

Bringing Employer Prospective Employee Together
  • When an appointment to a job is being made each
    party goes through a set sequence of actions
  • Turn to page 24 of the textbook and we will work
    through the 2 flow charts

Job applications
  • Employers ask for applications in a number of
    ways-
  • An application form
  • A letter of application
  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Often they want a combination of 2 or 3 of these

A letter of application
  • Some employers will invite applicants to write a
    formal letter of application. It should contain-
  • Reasons for applying for job
  • Contribution you can make
  • Your training and education
  • Relevant skills and knowledge acquired

  • Some basic rules-
  • Make the letter interesting so it stands out from
    the rest
  • Check English and spelling
  • Do not long words you are not familiar with
  • Keep sentences and paragraphs short and to the
    point
  • Use a word processor unless requested to apply in
    handwriting
  • Use the right conventions such as Dear Sir
    ending in Yours faithfully

    draft of a letter of application for a job you

  • A CV is a summary of an individuals
  • Personal details
  • Education and Training
  • Employment record
  • Interests, activities and attainments
  • Referees

Drafting a CV
  • A CV is a summary so it should be brief and
    contain only relevant information
  • Ideal is 1 page
  • Should not include jargon or specialist words
  • Should be typed in a clear, businesslike font

Activity
  • Look at the CV on page 27 of the textbook
  • Handwrite your own CV as at today, using words
    from the list on the top right of page 28 if
    appropriate
  • Evaluate it using the checklist on the top left
    of page 28
  • Type up a final version, paying particular
    thought to layout and style
  • Remember that a CV is a sales leaflet for you!
