Tartan
  • Tartan is a pattern of crisscrossed horizontal
    and vertical bands in multiple colours.
  • Tartan is particularly associated with Celtic
    countries, especially Scotland.
  • In the mid 1800's, specific tartans became
    associated with Scottish clans
  • The number of colours in Celtic Tartan, depended
    on the rank of the person who is wearing the
    tartan, therefore the King or most important
    person would have the most colours.

Clan tartans
  • The tartan of a Scottish clan is a sequence of
    unique colours and shades for use by members of
    that clan for kilts, ties, and other garments and
    decorations.
  • Every clan with a society has at least one
    distinct tartan.
  • Members of the British Royal Family wear the
    Royal Stewart Tartan.
  • There are also distinct tartans for military
    forces and also certain football teams.

The History of Tartan
  • The Earliest Tartan can be found in the 3rd and
    4th AD.
  • In the 17th and 18th century Tartan was seen to
    be characteristic of Scottish Highland Dress.
  • By 1819 there was over 250 different tartans.
  • Now there are over 4000 unique tartans.

    the Scottish National Football Team.

  • Tartan Day is celebrated in America, Australia
    and New Zealand.
  • This is because in America 30 million people
    claim to have Scottish Descent.
  • In America it is celebrated on the day of the
    Declaration of Arbroath.
  • In New Zealand and Australia it is celebrated on
    the anniversary of the Act of Proscription.

  • A kilt is a traditional garment of modern
    Scottish and Celtic culture typically worn by
    men.
  • The Kilt is like a skirt worn by Scottish Men.
  • The Kilt is normally made with around 5 metres of
    fabric.
  • And the material is very heavy.
  • The Kilt is made of Tartan material.

  • Kilts are also worn as part of the Scottish
    traditional dress for girls as well, in
    particular in Highland Dancing.

  • Kilts are often worn in other countries including
    Wales and Ireland.
  • The 3 main Irish Kilts, the Irish National Kilt,
    the Tara Kilt and The St Patrick Kilt.
  • The Welsh National Kilt is in the Welsh National
    colours which are Green, Red and White.

When do People normally wear Kilts?
  • Kilts are normally worn at Weddings and other
    important occasions.
  • Members of Pipe Bands also wear Kilts.
  • People also wear kilts to rugby and football
    matches when Scotland are playing.
  • The Kilt is worn with a jacket, belt, sporran and
    special shoes and socks.
