What is Distance Learning?
  • Students take course via the Internet.
  • Distance Learning is geared to students that find
    attending regular classes difficult.
  • Students who are highly motivated and practice
    good time management can achieve the same
    learning as in a traditional class.

What is a Blended Course?
  • Some portion of the course is taught in a
    traditional class room.
  • You should attend the class room portion of your
    course.
  • The remainder of the course is taught on-line.

Who should take an On-line Course?
Persons who cannot attend regular classes because
  • You have child care concerns
  • You have a conflict with another class
  • Its the only class offered
  • Youre at work
  • You have transportation problems
  • You have health concerns

What skills are needed?
  • The ideal student will be
  • comfortable using a computer with windows.
  • able to use Word.
  • able to create, open, and useE-mail.
  • comfortable adding attachments to E-mail.
  • use other software as required for the class.
  • able to navigate the internet.

What hardware is needed?
  • A personal computer
  • A PII or newer recommended
  • Or reliable access to a computer
  • A reliable Internet connection
  • Newest version of Internet Explorer or Netscape
  • A printer to print E-mail, or assignments
  • If using AOL, minimize AOL and use Internet
    Explorer or Netscape

What to expect from your class!
  • The amount of work required for an on-line course
    is the same as for a traditional course.
  • Your instructor will post announcements or send
    email with your assignments, projects, or due
    dates.
  • Your homework will be emailed to your instructor
    or placed in the digital drop box located in the
    tools section. Your instructor will let you know
    which method he/she prefers.
  • Your instructor will post deadlines to complete
    work. Failure to meet the deadline could result
    in points lost, if the instructor takes the late
    assignment.

How do I register for a class?
  • You can register during regular registration
    hours at the Williamston campus or Bertie campus
    of Martin Community College.
  • Additional forms will be required.
  • An E-Mail address will be provided by MCC.

Ive registered, now what?
  • Using the information given to you during
    registration
  • Email your instructor within the first three(3)
    calendar days to officially enter the class.
  • Your instructor should send you a welcome email
    within 24 hours.
  • Student Services gave you a form with your login
    name and password information.
  • If you are not in the class on the fifth calendar
    day, call (252) 792-1521, ext 285 for assistance.

Blackboard, what is it?
  • For your course, you will use Blackboard
  • You can login to your class at www.martincc.edu
    and follow the link to Distance Learning or if
    the MCC site is down try http//blackboard2.martin
    .cc.nc.us
  • Remember to wait until 500 p.m. the first day of
    classes or 24 hours if you registered late to
    access your classes.
  • All on-line students receive an email account at
    MCC, see the Student Email Instructions link on
    MCCs Distance Learning page

Launch your web browser and your internet
connection
Getting to your class.
Enter www.martincc.edu in the address bar, press
enter. Click Distance Learning
Or enter http//blackboard2.martin.cc.nc.us,
press enter

Enter your username.
Enter your password, check spelling, it is case
sensitive. Click Login.
Forgot your password? Enter your username and
click Forgot your password, you will be emailed
instructions

After successfully logging in, you will see the
Welcome screen.
  • Tools Menu
  • For Announcements, Calendar, and Task see
    following notes.
  • Click
  • My grades to check your grades.
  • Send Email to send email to your instructor or
    other students in your class.
  • Personal Information to change your information
    or password. Your should change your PASSWORD
    soon and often.

  • Clicking on a class here will take you to your
    class window.

Getting Assignments.
  • You should login to your class at least three
    times a week or as directed by your instructor.
    When you enter your class you will see any
    current announcements from your instructor. Be
    sure to click view all to make sure you see all
    announcements. This will be the primary way your
    instructor will communicate with the class.

Using Email
Select who you want to send email to.
All students in your class
All groups in your class if used
Your instructor
Select students in your class

Creating an email
If you select All users you will see their names
listed, if you use Select Users you will see
their names with a check box by each name. Click
who you want to send email to.
Enter an appropriate subject or use your
instructors guild lines for email subject.
Enter a brief message.
If you need to attach home work to your email,
click ADD. See next slide.

Adding Attachments
Click Browse, this will present you with the Open
Dialog Box.

Adding a file as an attachment
Use the LOOK IN list to open the drive where the
file is located.
Locate the folder where the file is located. Once
you locate the file, click on it to select
it. Your folder may be named differently.
Click open. This will take you back to the Select
File window. Click Submit This will take you
back to the email screen. Click Submit to send
your email.

Having problems?
  • You will need to use the most current version of
    Internet Explorer or Netscape. Older versions do
    not have the security protocols needed to access
    our site.
  • There is a known problem with AOL. If you use
    AOL, login and then launch Internet Explorer of
    Netscape and use it for your class work.

Having problems 2?
  • When you finish with your class, be sure to click
    the LOGOUT icon at the top of the screen, failure
    to do so could result in future login problems.
  • If you forget to logout, you may need to delete
    your temporary internet files. (see next two
    slides)
