Title: Intelligent Cruise Control

1
Intelligent Cruise Control
  • Timothy Egan
  • Phillip Elliot
  • Kerry Frisby
  • Ali Nazar Hussian
  • Michael Janda

2
Statistics
  • Rear end collisions are the most common
  • Over two million accidents per year are reported
  • Millions of dollars in accident cost

3
Problem
  • The slow decision making ability and reaction
time of drivers to adapt to changing traffic
    patterns in fast pace driving

4
Solution
  • The Intelligent Cruise Control System
  • To modify current cruise control by adding a
    radar system
  • able to detect the speed, the distance, and the
closing speed of the car in front of you
  • adjusts your speed accordingly to maintain a safe
    following distance

5
Abstract
  • The introduction of an Intelligent Cruise
Control will prevent accidents in close proximity
driving on the highway. It is a safety device to
allow a computer to assist with control of the
car when an accident is an almost a certainty.

6
Goal
  • Assist all drivers in maximum use of cruise
    control for convenience and safety

Model
9
Technology (Chaotic Radar Waves)
  • 1.) It is inexpensive
  • 2.) It is more efficient
  • 3.) It does more accurate measurements
  • 4.) It is capable of high interference rejection

10
Customer
  • All vehicle owners who currently use a cruise
    control system

11
Safe traveling distance
  • Safe traveling distance1 car length for every
    10mph
  • or
  • 3 Second Rule (1) watch the vehicle ahead pass a
fixed point, such as an overpass, sigh, fence,
corner, or other maker (2) Begin counting off the
seconds it takes you to reach the same place in
the road (3) adjust speed to reach 3 seconds.

12
Will Do
  • The ICC is able to detect a vehicle in front of
    it.
  • Based on the distance, actual speed and speed
differences, the system calculates the needed
acceleration or deceleration to maintain a safe
    distance.
  • The ICC will help less aware drivers maintain
    control over the vehicle.

13
Will not do
  •  It will not change the drivers behavior
    (aggressive driving)
  • It will not be a pure safety device in which it
can not directly prevent accident but it will
    increase reaction time

14
Pros
  • Allows for more reaction time so that a driver
    may prevent accidents
  • If accident, will lessen impact velocity, thus
lower cost for repairs, and more importantly,
less of a serious impact to driver and passengers
  • Relative easy implementation

15
Cons
  • Cars must already have an existing cruise control
    system
  • Cars without a easily mounted Cruise Control
    system will make installation difficult

16
Social Impact
  • Less cost of insurance claims, injuries, and
    vehicle repairs in accidents
  • Safer roads due to the maintaining of speed and
    following distance.

17
Risks
  • External forces may jam radar
  • People may be slow to use the new technology

18
Organization
19
Competition
  • Berkley- (200M grant from GM) working on
providing specifications for a fully operating
system with the smart highway system
  • Mitsubishi- has design of the chaotic radar and
should be implementing technology in new cars
    with next few years

20
Project Status
  • Feasibility
  • Technology Research
  • Integration of radar with the cruise control
    computer

21
Future
  • Integrate with smart highway system
  • Communicate with other cars

22
Conclusion
  • . The ICC will be the future tool to allow
technology to assist driver and to help insure
    safety on the highway system
