COMMUNITY POLICING
  • Campus Police Services has a commitment to
    community policing.  All officers, security
officers and dispatchers have a role in the
    community oriented policing philosophy.
  • Campus Police Services philosophy toward
community oriented policing is a way of thinking
and standard operating procedures that allow the
department and the College community to work
closely together in new ways to solve problems
    such as
  • crime, the fear of crime, drug use, and other
    illegal activities
  • Campus Police Services mission is to enhance the
overall quality of life at The College of New
    Jersey.
  • Campus Police Services strives to better serve
the people in the community by use of a strategy
of sustained contact with members of the
    community.
  • Campus Police Services ultimate goal is to
minimize crime in our community by working in a
    partnership with our community members.

COMMUNITY POLICING PROGRAMS
  • Bicycle and Foot Patrols
  • Bicycle and foot patrols are conducted by police
officers when weather and manpower conditions
    permit.
  • Blue Emergency Lights with Telephones
  • 18 Blue emergency lights with telephones have
been placed in locations around The College for
use by the public. Police Officers respond
    whenever these phones are activated.
  • Escort Program
  • Campus Police provides escorts for members of the
campus community who have concerns for their
    personal safety.
  • Crime Alert Notices and Campus Police Information
  • During periods of high criminal activity or the
potential for criminal activity, the department
publishes crime alert notices. The campus police
also publishes an Annual Security Report which
includes information on but is not limited to,
three years of crime statistics, alcohol
policies, drug policies, sexual health programs
and policies, Alcohol and Drug Education Program
(ADEPT), and important telephone numbers. This
report is required under the Campus Security Act.
  • Campus Lighting Checks
  • Police officers complete campus lighting check
every week. This inspection ensures maximum
lighting for the public at night.
  • Critical Incident Plan
  • The College has a critical incident plan that
outlines procedures and responsibilities for a
wide range of possible incidents on campus.
Campus police are central to implementing and
    managing critical incidents on campus.

COMMUNITY POLICING PROGRAMS
  • Alcohol Awareness Programs/Enforcement
  • A proactive and approach is used to address the
problems of underage drinking and drunk driving.
Various groups within the community provide
    educational programs regarding the problems
associated with alcohol abuse and misuse and its
relationship to crime. TCNJ police officers
strictly enforce New Jersey State laws regarding
underage alcohol usage and driving under the
    influence.
  • Crime Prevention Programs
  • The campus police participate in presentations on
how members of the College community can assist
their campus police in fighting crime on campus.
Officers obtain and distribute crime prevention
materials and participate in community crime
    prevention programs. The campus police
participate in College activities such as
Wellness Fairs and Expos by having a crime
prevention and campus police information booth at
    these events.
  • Traffic Enforcement
  • TCNJ police officers enforce the colleges and
the New Jersey State Motor Vehicle Laws Title 39
on the college campus and contiguous roadways.
  • Bicycle Registration Program and Property Marker
  • Community members are encouraged to register
their bicycle with the TCNJ PD. The department
makes available, upon request, a free engraving
tool which members of the community can use to
    mark their property.
