Title: Introduction to Jeep
1- Introduction to Jeep
- Prior the start of World War II, the United
States military was searching for an all-terrain,
reconnaissance, and command vehicle suitable for
the armys needs. 49 days later the Jeep was
born
2In 1940 the United States military sent out
specifications for their desired product,
originally Bantam jumped on the ball but was
later joined by Willys Overland and
Ford. 1942 Jeep MB
- As Nazi Germany began to take over Germany and N.
Africa in 1940, the United States military
requested an all-terrain 4x4 command vehicle
design from over 100 companies. However, only two
companies responded American Bantam Car Company
and Willys-Overland. Bantam no longer in
production, and with a 49-day deadline, had no
other choice but to bring in chief engineer Karl
Probst. Who in only two days had complete plans
and cost quotes prepared. - First Bantam prototype
3Willys-Overland and Ford
- After Bantam submitted Probsts proposal, the
military released the design to both Ford and
Willys-Overland. However, Willys won out due to
its power capabilities and overall abilities.

4With little time to spare Willys and Ford were
grand manufacturing rights and each Willys MB was
sold to the U.S. Military for 749.
Final Willys MB
- Between 1941 and 1945 about 640,000 Jeeps were
built and sold to the U.S. Military.
5Design experts also produced an amphibious Jeep
called the Seep.
However, due to poor design only 18,000 were
built by Ford.
6Civilian Jeeps were first introduced in 1945, the
CJ-2A, was marketed as a work vehicle.
7In 1948, the CJ-2A was replaced by the much
similar CJ-3A, and five years later became the
CJ-3B..
- Very little was changed except for a newly
designed hood and grill.
8The CJ-3B remained in production until 1968 after
nearly 155,000 were manufactured.
In 1953 the Jeep was bought from Willys by the
Henry J. Kaiser interests for 60,000.
9Two years later after extensive design and
research, the CJ-5 was introduced.
- Sporting recessed headlights, stiffer chassis,
and improved seating the CJ-5 became very popular
with the design going nearly unchanged for 29
years.
10In 1970 the Jeep was sold to American Motors
Corporation.By 1978 over 600 Jeeps rolled off
the assembly line each day.
- In 1987, AMC introduced the ever popular Wrangler
YJ
11Jeep being originally in the hands of Willys was
passed on to Kaiser, AMC, Chrysler Corporation,
and now is in the hands of Daimler Chrysler.
Today over 600,000 Jeeps are produced and sold
each year.
12Now under Daimler Chrysler, Jeep has begun an all
new design and styling mentality. Bold and retro
but, like the original, versatile.
Jeeps new concept, the Treo, utilizes a unique
21 seating design.
13Another concept Jeep introduced, the Rescue, also
emphasizes the original attitude of the Jeep,
versatility.
14Bold styling and rugged appearance complete the
overall design.
15- Nicknamed the Rockcrawler, this Jeep concept is a
modern representation of the original Willys
Jeep, by keeping the 7-slot grill and the
trapezoidal wheel arches.
16"We call it the pure American," said Trevor
Creed, Senior Vice President of Design for the
Chrysler Daimler Group.
