Complex sentences
  • A complex sentence contains one independent
    clause (a complete idea) and one dependent clause
    (an incomplete idea)
  • Although it is 80 degrees, Tom decided to wear a
    coat.

Clauses
  • A clause is a group of words containing a subject
    and a verb.
  • Are sentences clauses?
  • YES!
  • A sentence is an INDEPENDENT CLAUSE

Independent Clause
  • An independent clause has a subject, verb, and
    complete idea. It can stand alone
  • Tom decided to wear a coat.

Dependent Clause
  • A dependent clause has a subject and a verb, but
    it cannot stand alone, it needs more information
    to make it complete.
  • Although it is 80 degrees

Subordinating Conjunctions
  • Words like after, because, although, if are
    subordinating conjunctions.
  • When you add these words to a clause, you make
    the clause DEPENDENT.
  • Gina smiled wherever she went.
