Title: Timeline for High School Visits

1
Timeline for High School Visits
  • Telephone calls to schedule visits to schools
need to be made by mid-October.
  • SCHOOL CALENDERS FILL UP FAST!!!!!!!
  • High School visits need to be completed before
    the start of next semester
  • THANKSGIVING OR CHRISTMAS BREAK ARE GOOD TIMES TO
    VISIT!

2
Phone Training
  • All of the high school contact names and phone
numbers are listed in the Ambassadors phone book.
    (Light Blue Binder)
  • Use the telephone in the corner of RA 1056 to
make long distance telephone calls to high
    schools
  • Once you have made your telephone call please log
it into the phone log. (Brown binder)
  • Make sure that you have all of the necessary
    information to make your visit.
  • Fill out the initial contact report on the web.

3
Phone Training (What to Say)
  • When someone answers the phone first explain who
you are and ask to speak to either your contact
person or a Jr or Sr Math or Science teacher
  • If your contact person is not available ask for
their planning period and call them back then.
  • When the teacher comes to the phone, tell them
your name and that you are an Engineering
Ambassador and that you would like to visit their
    class to explain Engineering
  • Answer all of the questions on the Initial
    Contact Report

4
Phone Training (What to Say)
  • Turn to a partner and practice introducing
yourself as you would if you were calling a high
    school.

5
Phone Training Tips
  • Speak slowly and clearly
  • Talk to a teacher, not a counselor or principal
so that your visit is not mistaken as an
    official visit from the university
  • Make sure that you have a telephone number for
the school in case of bad weather
  • YOU MUST BE ABLE TO CONTACT THE SCHOOL IF YOU CAN
    NOT MAKE THE VISIT

6
High School Presentations
  • The purpose of the high school visits is to
inform students in upper level math and science
classes about Engineering. Then to tell students
about the wonderful opportunities that that
    K-State Engineering offers them.

7
Before the Presentation
  • Dress for the visits is business casual (no suits
and ties but also no blue jeans and sneakers)
  • Call to confirm that you are coming for the visit
    a few days before.
  • All of the necessary supplies for high school
visits will be posted in the storage closet in
Rathbone 156. Make sure that you know how many
students are in the class, so you know what you
    need to take.
  • Try to arrive at the school 10 to 15 minutes
    before the presentation.

8
Getting Started
  • Introduce yourself. Tell them your name, major,
    and where you are from.
  • EXAMPLE HI, I AM AMBER SEBA, SENIOR IN
    BIOLOGICAL AND AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING FROM
KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY. I GRADUATED FROM LARNED
HIGH SCHOOL IN 1998. I AM HERE TO TALK TO YOU
    ABOUT ENGINEERING.

9
Breaking the Ice
  • Next, you want to explain what Engineering is to
the students. There are several ways to do this.
  • You can walk the students through several
applications of Engineering with one product.
  • Example An Alarm Clock
  • You could show the students that everything they
    did this morning involved Engineering.
  • Example A mechanical Engineer designed the car
that you drove to school in. A civil engineer
designed the roads that you drove on. ETC..
  • You can ask for volunteer to explain what
Engineering is, and reward them with candy. (ASK
FOR PERMISSION IF YOU ARE GOING TO BRING CANDY)

10
Breaking the Ice
  • Turn to a partner and discuss how you would
break the ice. Try to personalize it, to make
    it more interesting.

11
K-State Engineering
  • Introduce all of the different majors offered,
and explain what you can do with that degree.
  • We will be introducing each department to you
    during later meetings.
  • Be sure to mention some of the rewards that the
    department has received.
  • Example AIChE, Chemical Engineerings
professional society has won outstanding chapter
    for the last 6 years
  • Be sure to introduce all of the majors, and not
to make any one of them seem better or worse than
    any of the others.

12
Project/Video
  • You can use either the project, which we will be
introducing to you later, or the video to explain
    more about Engineering.
  • The project is usually better, because it allows
the students to do something hands on. If you
have a very short class period ( less than 30
minutes) then you may want to consider using the
    video.
  • If you are going to use the video, please watch
it first and use only the applicable parts. It is
    slightly outdated.

13
Wrapping Up the Visit
  • After completing the project, be sure that the
students understand how it relates to
    Engineering.
  • Be sure to remind the students of the dates that
scholarships are due, and the dates of the Open
    House.
  • Encourage students to visit campus.
  • Take any questions that the students might have.

14
Tips for Taking Questions
  • If you dont know the answer to a question, jot
it down and ask Doris to find more information
for students when you get back. Do not make
something up, it will reflect poorly on us when
    the student discovers the truth.
  • Personalize your answers! Tell students what you
did when you were an incoming freshmen.
  • Be positive when you answer questions!

15
Preparing for the Visit
  • If you have not given a visit, it is a good idea
to plan out your visit. (You may want to practice
giving some of your presentation to a friend.)
  • Do not prepare every word you are going to say!
  • Be sure to look at the class, not your notes or
    the floor.
  • Be sure that you have the address and phone
number of the school in case something comes up.
  • Review all of the material given in the packet
about Public Speaking and Presentation Dos and
    Donts

16
After the Visit
  • Fill out the visitation report on the Ambassadors
    website.
  • Return all unused supplies to Rathbone 156.

17
Reminders
