Although there are numerous historical churches
throughout the city of Barcelona, ??it is without
doubt the basilica I Expiatori Temple de la
Sagrada Familia, who steals the show.

This sizeable Roman Catholic church was designed
by the Catalan architect and accomplished hands
of modernism figurehead Antoni Gaudi and now
ranks as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, although
the structure is actually incomplete and never
fully finished. Serving as the seat of the
Archbishop of Barcelona, ??the Cathedral of the
Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia another striking
building. This cathedral was built between the
years of 1298 and 1460 on the site of an historic
Visigoth chapel.

The neo-Gothic facade was added a few years later
in 1870, is based on an original design in 1408
and has many complex functions. In particular, it
is known for its numerous roof gargoyles, which
consist of a series of mythical creatures and
animals.

Dedicated to Eulali, a patron saint of the city,
the cathedral of Barcelona is richly decorated
and a truly unique sight. The interior is large
and full of original features. This is actually
one of the few churches in the city not to be
damaged in civil wars.

With chapels, magnificent Gothic architecture and
many interesting tombs you are also able to visit
the roof via steps or a lift. Interestingly, the
monastery was called home by some 13 white geese,
within the 'font class Oques' (also the geese
live). Major renovation began in 1968 and lasted
for just over four years.

Cathedral is just over an hour north-east of
Barcelona, ??a beautiful church with many
interesting features, including a beautiful
baroque façade. Much of the building has changed
over the centuries and there is also a museum
with many historical exhibits.
