2User Survey and Technology Options for Online
Access to CCA Information
- ABAG and SFEI commissioned GreenInfo Network to
conduct a preliminary assessment of need and
technology options for online mapping and other
information. - A survey was administered to potential users and
interested CCA parties in Winter 2006, with a 25
response rate.
3Survey of Online Mapping Options
- GreenInfo also surveyed a range of on-line
mapping and information tools to do an initial
ranking.
- The survey of needs indicated
- Strongest interest in basic online mapping and
related information - Significant interest in more expanded online
information, after core needs are met. - A cautiousness about system expansions, to ensure
best use of resources.
4Functions that were most highly strongly valued
by survey respondents.
- View natural resource information for CCA
- Download GIS data about a CCA and generate
reports - View Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Explore water quality monitoring data and
scenarios - Add new data and link to other sites
- If the tool could model by user choice
(interactivity) - Modification of stream beds and banks.
- Water and sediment movement and storage.
- Urban planning
- Ag practices
- Other rural land uses
- Transportation
- Recreation and open space uses
-
Download GIS data about a CCA
5Most important data.
- Riparian zones, creeks, wetlands
- Permitted discharge points
- Threatened and endangered species
- Impaired water body segments
6Range of Response Critical to Useful
- Urban growth projections
- Areas served by septic tanks
- Watershed management plan boundaries
7Significant Information Access Concerns
- Property owner data (from already-available
assessor records) - Personal Technology Capacity
- Over 80 of respondents said their technology
capacity was satisfactory or strong.
8General Comments
- Be careful to invest time an effort to market
tool to intended users - Use a cautious, non-duplicative approach
- Some skepticism about online modeling and
mapping, versus other projects (cost/benefit) - Ensure good documentation of any data provided
9Review of public web sites with water-related
information
- Data viewers
- Date viewers with query/selection
- Modeling with text-based selections
- Modeling with GIS
- Examples of web sites follow.
