Some Facts About Recycling

• Fact 1
• The average American used 650 pounds of paper
  each year. 100 MILLION TONS of wood could be
  saved each year if all that paper was actually
  recycled.
• Fact 2
• About 80 of what Americans throw away is
  recyclable, yet our recycling rate is only 28.
• Fact 3
• Americans use 2.5 MILLION plastic bottles every
  hour! Most of them are thrown away ...
• Fact 4
• Every month Americans throws out enough glass
  bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper
  (think Empire State Building). All these jars
  are recyclable!
• Fact 5
• Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown
  into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea
  creatures a year! Ever heard of the Great Pacific
  Garbage Patch? It's twice the size of Texas and
  is floating somewhere between San Francisco and
  Hawaii. It's also 80 percent plastic, and weighs
  in at 3.5 million tons.
• Fact 6
• Recycling one ton (about 2,000 pounds) of paper
  saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil (enough to run
  the average car for 1,260 mile), 4,100 kilowatts
  of energy (enough power for the average home for
  six months), 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space,
  and 60 pounds of pollution.
• Fact 7
• The 17 trees saved by recycling a ton of paper
  can absorb a total of 250 pounds of carbon
  dioxide from the air each year.

• Fact 8
• If all our newspapers were recycled, we could
  save about 250 MILLION trees each year! If every
  American recycled just one-tenth (that's one out
  of ten) of their newspapers, we could save about
  25 MILLION trees a year.

• More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped
  each day, using 133 square miles of aluminum
  foil. Believe it not, ALL that foil is
  recyclable, but not may people realize it so most
  it goes in the trash!

• Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to
  run a TV for three hours - or the equivalent of a
  half a gallon of gasoline. In spite of this,
  Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild
  our entire commercial fleet of airplanes every
  three months!

• A typical family consumes 182 gallons of pop (aka
  soda), 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk
  and 26 gallons of bottled water a year. That's a
  lot of containers - make sure they're recycled!

Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a "stew of
plastic and marine debris, at least twice the
size of Texas by some estimates, floating in
the Pacifc Ocean some 1,000 miles off the West
Coast. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? This
scenario sounds like Lil Abner meets Godzilla,
something out of a 1950s B science fiction
movie, but is a waking-world reality, according
to Paul Miller (The Plastics Paradox Were
Drowning in an Ocean of Garbage, The Denver
Post, 13 Jan 08). Indeed, this floating garbage
heap is very, very real. Miller explains "Marine
researcher Charles Moore has been studying this 3
million-ton waste dump in an area known as the
North Pacific Gyre, which captures cast-off,
wind-blown junk and spins it around in clockwise
trade winds that circulate along the Pacific rim.
Moore, whos been tracking the mass for more than
10 years, says its too remote and difficult to
clean up. Three million tons of garbage? Eek!

• Federal laws will soon make electronic waste
  recycling mandatory.

Environmental Impact

• Cell phones and empty ink cartridges contain
  plastics and metals that harm our land and
  environment. They can affect the air you or your
  children breathe and the water you drink.
• Metals found in electronic waste range from
  Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Beryllium, Mercury and
  other heavy metals and carcinogens.
• Typical plastic from a cell phone or ink
  cartridge can take the better sum of 800 years to
  decompose.
• Mismanagement of eWaste depletes irreplaceable
  natural resources.
• Estimated 300,000 tons of eWaste make it to the
  landfill each year.

Whats the potential to collect?

• 10 Million cell phones deactivated and replaced
  each month.
• Estimated 500,000 million are already deactivated
  and sit around homes and offices.
• Avg. value 2.00 to 5.00 per phone.

• 450 million cartridges sold in the USA each year.
• Only 18 are collected and recycled. About 370
  million waiting for NABVETS to collect.
• 130 million printers in the United States.
• Only collect and ship recyclable units.

Look at NABVETS and think!

• Approximately 15,000 active members
• Each member contacts 10 people in his family or
  sphere of influence. Thats a collection circle
  of 150,000 individuals.
• Ask every person to collect their own and from
  their friends (at least 10 per year).
• Thats 1,500,000 units per year

What would be the result of this effort?
The collection program would realize between
3,000,000 to 5,000,000 dollars that could
benefit many people in your communities. (These
are estimates, it could be substantially more or
less.) NABVETS would probably experience a
growth in membership of 20. People want to be
part of active organizations, where their work is
evident in the community. You can teach your
children about the environment, about the
electronic waste problem and the importance of
recycling and reusing. Tens of Thousands of new
jobs are created as more people recycle and then
purchase remanufactured products. Remanufactured
products made in the United States keep our money
here and contribute greatly to Price
Competition with off-shore companies.

Whats my next step to get started

• Make a Commitment to your Organization and the
  Chapter
• Go to the Recycle for NABVETS website
• Register your Chapter and select a Collection
  Coordinator.
• Ask every member to sign a Pledge to Collect.
• Read and know the information on the site.
• Start Planning collection activities and getting
  the word out in the community.

and energy to work with my fellow NABVETS members
in organizing local collection events and
encourage participation of other caring
organizations within our community to assist in
keeping toxins out of our landfills while raising
the money we need to help our veterans and the
children in our communities improve their lives.
During my collection efforts I will also spread
the word about NABVETS and why joining this
National Veteran Service Organization (VSO) is a
great way to help a local fellow veteran and his
family.I will notify all my family and friends,
regardless where they reside and ask that they
help me collect these items so that my Chapter
can meet their minimal goal of 10,000 units. I
will tell no less than two people each day and
ask that they tell people each day during the
next six months to save these items for our
collection effort. I will share my successful
efforts with other members of our Chapter.WE CAN
DO IT. WE ARE VETERANS WHO CARE ABOUT OTHERS AND
THE COMMUNITY WE LIVE IN. ______________________
