  • After the Union defeat at Bull Run, Lincoln put
    Gen. George McClellan in command
  • Although his troops outnumbered the enemy
    McClellan was consistently out-maneuvered and
    defeated by Gen. Robert E. Lee
  • At the Battle of Antietam-- the bloodiest day in
    American history (over 26,000 casualties) the
    Union could claim a victory, but they should have
    won the war

  • Western troops were led by Ulysses S. Grant
  • Grant was more aggressive than McClellan, and had
    more success, including a victory at the Battle
    of Shiloh in April, 1862
  • Later that month, the Union captured New Orleans
    and controlled most of the Mississippi River
