2The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency predicts
that unless greenhouse gas emissions decrease,
the Earths average temperature will rise from
2.5 to 10.4 F above 1990 levels by the end of
this century.
The effects of global warming include rising sea
levels, melting glaciers, increasing numbers and
intensity of droughts, tropical storms, high
tides, heat waves, and widespread changes to
plant and animal species.
According to the U.N.s Intergovernmental Panel
of Climate Change, global warming since the
mid-20th century is largely due to human-caused
greenhouse gas emissions.

4One-third of energy-related greenhouse gas
emissions come from burning fossil fuels for
transportation.
What can you do about it?
switch to biodiesel
5What is Biodiesel?
C14 - C24 Methyl Ester C19 H36 O2
- Diesel-equivalent alternative fuel.
- Clean-burning, biodegradable non-toxic.
- Made from processed vegetable oils including
canola, peanut, soy, mustard seed, rapeseed
palm. - Also made from recycled cooking oils and trap
grease.
6Biodiesel is Not
- Unprocessed or waste vegetable oil (WVO).
- Vegetable oils must be dewatered filtered
before they can be used as biofuel.
7How is Biodiesel Made?
- Transesterification chemical process followed to
produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. - Transesterification separates glycerine from fat
or vegetable oil. - Methyl Ester (the chemical name for biodiesel) is
a byproduct of this process.
8Technical Definitions
- Biodiesel
- a fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long
chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or
animal fats, designated B100, and meeting the
requirements of the American Society of Testing
and Materials ASTM D 6751.3 - Biodiesel Blend
- a blend of biodiesel fuel meeting ASTM D 6751
with petroleum-based diesel fuel, designated BXX,
where XX represents the volume percentage of
biodiesel fuel in the blend
9Why Use Biodiesel?
- 60 lower carbon dioxide emissions than petroleum
diesel. - 100 biodiesel eliminates sulfur emissions.
- Made from renewable resources.
- Recycling trap grease and waste veggie oils into
biodiesel reduces waste in landfills and sewage
treatment plants. - Reduces dependency on foreign oil.
10Another Reason to Use Biodiesel
- greater fuel lubricity slows engine wear
- reduces maintenance costs
11Who Can Use Biodiesel?
- Anyone with a diesel!
- Can be used in 100 pure form (B100).
- Can also be combined with petroleum diesel.

13Public Use of Biodiesel in the USA
- US Military began using B20 (20 biodiesel) in
Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force vehicles in
2003. - City of Berkeley, CA switched all diesel-fueled
city vehicles (school busses, garbage trucks
etc.) to B100 (100 biodiesel) in 2002. - San Francisco became the largest U.S. city to
switch its fleet to B20 (20 biodiesel) in April,
2007. - In 2005, Minnesota became the first American
state to require that all diesel fuel sold in the
state contain 2 biodiesel. Minnesota Governor
Tim Pawlenty has proposed that the requirement be
increased to B20 by 2015.
14Biodiesel in Europe Germany
- Biodiesel has been produced on an industrial
scale in the EU since 1992. - At present, Europe represents 90 of the worlds
biodiesel production and consumption. - In Germany, the leading European biodiesel
producer, biodiesel has a 4 share in the total
diesel market! - Over 1,900 fuel stations sell biodiesel to the
German public.
15Making the Switch Things to consider
- Biodiesel is a strong solvent and may release
buildup from fuel lines, clogging fuel filters. - Biodiesel may also degrade rubber fuel lines
manufactured before 1992. These may need to be
replaced with newer synthetic fuel lines which
resist biodiesel.
16Performance?
- Torque and horsepower of vehicles fueled by
biodiesel is similar to those fueled by petroleum
diesel. - Biodiesels higher cetane rating can improve
engine performance. - The Engine Manufacturers Association has issued a
statement that fuel and engine systems problems
should not result from 5 biodiesel blends. - But this may be overly conservative as some
European vehicle manufacturers most notably
Volkswagen endorse 100 biodiesel in their
vehicles.
17Where Can I Buy Biodiesel?
18Biodiesel in Canada?
- Apart from a few retailers in Ontario and British
Columbia, - biodiesel is not yet widely available for
purchase in Canada.
