6Easy Strategies for Math Success
- Index Cards- For fast facts and vocabulary
- Decks of cards Dice- Addition, Subtraction,
Multiplication, Division (Fun with Playing Cards
Handout) - Shopping and Dining Out- Estimation Making
change - Rulers- Measurement around the house
- Cooking- Measurement, fractions in recipes
- Reading calendars, schedules, timetables, and
weather charts - Practice counting money and making change. For
example, tell your child you have coins in your
pocket that total 90 cents and ask, What
combinations of coins could be in my pocket? - Elapsed time- Have your child write down when
they start a chore/homework, etc. Then, when
they are finished, they can write the end time
and figure out how much time has past.
7Fun With Playing Cards
- Speaking about cards
- What fraction of your hand is red?
- What is the product of the cards that are
black - What is the sum of the cards?
- What is the average of all five cards?
- What is the range of the cards?
- War with a Math twist
- This game follows the typical War card game.
Each player will throw two cards instead of one.
Either find the sum, difference, or product of
the two cards. Whoever has the highest wins that
hand. For example - Player 1 throws a 3 and 4 (sum 7,
difference 1, product 12) - Player 2 throws a 2 and 9 (sum 11,
difference 7, product 18)
