Title: General Computer Maintenance
1General Computer Maintenance
- The following should be done at least once a
month on the school units. You decide how often
on a home unit.
2Clear your Cache files!
Cached files are files that your computer
downloads when you access any page. The storage
of these files will slow your computer down.
There are several ways to get rid of them.
3How to clear the cached files
If you use Internet Explorer that comes with
Windows, you can Point at the Icon on the
desktop that goes to Internet Explorer Right
click on it Slide to Properties
4Select the delete files button. You may also want
to clear the history of the unit, though this is
usually set to do it for you every 20 days. Pages
kept in history only allow you to access them
more quickly.
If a page is in your history and you are OFFLINE
when you access it, you will still see the page
from your history file. This is called accessing
offline, you may bookmark something to purposely
access while offline for presentation purposes.
5another way!
Internet Explorer usually stores your cached
files in a folder on your hard drive called
Temporary Internet Files, which may be found
within Windows. You can empty this folder by
hand if you wish to see how many files you are
deleting.
6Open My Computer Double click on C Double Click
on the folder Windows Double click on the folder
you want to look in such as Temporary Internet
Files Cookies Downloaded Program Files
7Click Edit then Select All Or Hold Ctrl A This
will highlight all the files in that folder,
now Either hit delete on the keyboard or select
it from the file menu.
8- Answer yes when it asks for confirmation you want
to delete these files. - If it comes up and tells you a file cant be
deleted, select cancel - Hold either Ctrl button and click on that file
(it will usually be the first one in the list
NOW) and this will unhighlight it. Then hit
delete again to continue.
9NOT using IE or Just to be sure!
10Click on Start Find (Search in 2000) Files or
Folders
11Type in Cache. This tells the computer to find
anything that starts with cache

delete everything in the folder.

press enter. This will tell the computer to find
all files that end with tmp that stands for temp

click on the recycle bin and empty the trash. You
have now cleaned up your hard drive but we must
check for problems and reorganize the files since
some have been deleted now.
