- Purpose
- Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is a
professional society that represents the
culmination of engineering and the life sciences.
The goal of the organization is to promote the
increase of biomedical engineering knowledge and
its utilization (bmes.org).

- BMES Bulletin
- All professional BMES members receive the
quarterly newsletter which provides
bioengineering articles, career opportunities,
conference dates, and student chapter news.
4What is BMES?
- Meetings
- BMES campus meetings are not mandatory. They
typically occur every few weeks during Fridays
free hour. Students are notified via e-mail of
meeting dates, times, and locations. In the
past, food has been provided at BMES meetings

- Membership
- Students may belong to the professional society
or the student section or both. By belonging to
the professional society, students will have
access to BMES Bulletin. The student section
provides social and career-oriented outings.

- Cost
- The annual student rate for the professional
organization is 30. The fee for the student
section is 5. Students are encouraged to attend
campus meetings and events even if they do not
belong to the society. - Â

- Why Should I Join?
- There are many benefits of joining BMES. By
becoming a professional member, you will receive
BMES Bulletin and be notified of career
opportunities. Even if you do not become a
professional member there are many events and
activities that will enhance your social and
academic goals. By attending BMES campus
meetings you will be introduced to other
Biomedical Engineering students at various levels
who will provide insight into classes,
professors, and design groups. - Â
8You Know Youre a BE IfYou try to determine
the thermal resistivity of your bread bowl and/or
nutrigrain bar.You roast marshmallows on Op
Amps.The cockroach in the senior design lab has
become your friend.You let your gut lead,
knowing the rest will follow.A 20 page
assignment is considered a break.For show and
tell you bring in images of something thats been
removed from your body.You routinely take fewer
things back to Tech Support than you check
out.The word oops isnt funny.You know what
perching is.You run a tab at the local
Starbucks.Your idea of solving a problem is
multiplying by zero and adding the correct
answer.Your professor declares, MSOE Smack down
in the cornfield!BEs When We Make Mistakes
People Die.

- Tour of the Medical College of Wisconsin
- By touring the Medical College of Wisconsin,
students learn about graduate opportunities,
explore related majors, talk to graduate-level
professors, and obtain insight into summer
research programs and graduate school
applications. - Fall and Spring Picnics
- During the fall and spring quarters, a BE
professor volunteers to host the BMES/Nursing
picnic at his/her house. Professors and students
attend the picnic enjoying food, games, and a
campfire. - Halloween Party
- Around Halloween BMES hosts a party in the senior
design lab with food, games and a chance to
escape the stress of midterms. - Movie Night
- Students order pizza and watch movies using
campus facilities.

- Job Opportunities in Biomedical Engineering
- This presentation by Dr. Jay Goldberg went over
graduate study opportunities for Biomedical
Engineering students and the various job
opportunities that a student with a Bachelor of
Science in BE has. Pizza and drinks were also
provided by BMES. - Christma-Chanuka-Kwanzaaca Party
- This party is held during the winter before
winter break. Its a great opportunity to get
away from school for a bit and catch up with old
and new friends over food provided by BMES. All
attendees are also encouraged to bring a dish to
share. - The Dos and Donts of Your First Job
- Dr. Samantha Richerson hosted an informational
session on the realities of the workplace.
Topics included how to make a job cubical space
your own how to impress your boss and move up
and how to deal with workplace politics. - BMES T-Shirts
- Students design BMES t-shirts to advertise the
society.
