ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTIONPENALTY
  • If discovered by umpire or opposing team, the
player is restricted to the dugout for the
    remainder of the game
  • If discovered while on offense, player is out and
restricted to the dugout for the remainder of the
    game
  • The player replaced by the illegal substitute has
been removed for purpose of re-entry
  • If at bat, the next proper batter is the batter
who follows the replaced batter in the line-up

21
ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTIONPENALTY CONTD.
  • If discovery made before next pitch to next
    batter of either team
  • Runners return to bases at time of pitch unless
advance made without action from Ill. Sub
  • Outs made on play will stand
  • In a game ending situation, discovery must be
made before all infielders cross foul lines

22
ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTIONPENALTY CONTD.
  • If illegal player is on defense
  • Restricted to the dugout for the remainder of the
    game and replaced immediately
  • If involved in the play, and opposing team or
umpire discovers it before next pitch to either
team, the offense has the option of
  • Taking the result of the play or
  • Having the batter bat again
  • If pitch was a strike it would be negated
  • If pitch was a ball it would be allowed to stand

23
ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTIONPENALTY CONTD.
  • Any player for whom the illegal player
substitutes may re-enter only if he/she is
eligible to do so under the re-entry rule. I.E.
a starter could re-enter only if they had not
been previously replaced. A legal substitute
would be out of the game.
  • Note If you believe the illegal substitution was
a deliberate act by a player and/or coach,
ejection is possible under 3-3-1g-4 behavior not
in accordance with the spirit of fair play.
  • TAKE YOUR TIME IF THIS HAPPENS.
  • IT CAN BE CONFUSING TO YOU AND WILL CERTAINLY BE
    TO THE COACHES AND TEAMS

SITUATION 1The DH, Gray is batting for F3,
White. In the 5th inning Gray replaces White at
first base. In the 6th inning White re-enters
for Gray and plays first. In the 7th inning,
Gray attempts to re-enter for White. The
opposing coach protests the move. You
rule SITUATION 2 In the top half of the first,
S1 pinch hits for F1. In the bottom half of the
first inning, (a) the team attempts to re-enter
F1 to face the first batter or (b) attempts to
re-enter F1 to pitch in the third inning. RULING

  • SITUATION 3 Are the following substitutions
    allowable by rule?
  • Starting pitcher, Davis, leaves the mound and is
replaced in the 3rd inning. The opposing team
pulls to 5-4. Davis re-enters in the same spot
in the batting order and pitches the 7th.
  • Starting F6, Andrews, pitches in the 3rd and is
replaced for a pinch-hitter. He returns to the
line-up in the 6th at SS and then pitches the
    7th.

play third for the 4th, 5th and 6th. In the 7th,
he goes to the mound to pitch.

He returns to the mound to pitch in the 7th.

SITUATION 4 The visiting team has only 10
players present and the coach uses a DH for the
pitcher. In the 3rd inning, the center fielder
sprains his ankle sliding into second base. The
coach wants to have the DH play center field,
knowing he will lose the role of the DH. You
will SITUATION 5 In the 3rd inning, the coach
moves the pitcher Black to first and the first
baseman, Davis, to pitch. Davis gets the batter
to pop out for the first out. Now the coach
brings Black back to pitch and Davis back to
first. Black gets the next batter to ground out.
The coach next wants Davis to return to pitch
and have Black at first , and then have Black
pitch the fourth inning. Other than wishing you
had never taken the game, you

SITUATION 6 White is the DH for the center
fielder, Jones. While making a great catch
against the outfield wall, Jones cuts his knee.
He is given a reasonable amount of time to treat
the wound but is not able to stop the bleeding.
White goes in to play center field. Later, with
his knee bandaged and okay, Jones wants to return
to the game. You will Same situation, but White
is the DH for the pitcher not Jones. Can the
