Title: INTRODUCTIONS AND OPENING SESSION
1INTRODUCTIONS AND OPENING SESSION
2Goals/ Objectives
- For everyone to get to know everyone else.
- For everyone get oriented to the LLDC.
- For everyone to understand the Mission and
Purpose of the OA. - Impart the three basic strategies for successful
individual leadership success.
3Group Activity! applause(10 Minutes)
- Divide into Groups of approximately 10, and take
turns introducing yourselves. - Each person gets 60 seconds to tell who they are,
what they are like, what their values are and why
they are involved in Scouts. - Do NOT mention family, job, hobbies, etc!
4OUR MISSION
A MISSION ANSWERS THE REASON YOU TOOK THE JOB YOU
HAVE NOW, YOUR CORE REASON FOR BEING A LEADER. A
MISSION IS OFTEN NOT THE FIRST ANSWER TO THE
QUESTION WHY?. WHEN A GROUP OF NUCLEAR
SCIENTISTS WERE ASKED WHAT THEY DID, THEY
RESPONSDED WE BUILD BOMBS. TO HAVE STAYED WITH
THAT ANSWER WOULD HAVE PRODUCED A LESS THAN
INSPIRING MISSION. BY ASKING WHY, THE GROUP GOT
TO THE REASON THEY DID THEIR WORK- TO LEARN TO
USE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF
THE NATION. THAT MISSION WAS ONE THAT COULD KEEP
THEM GOING!
5OUR MISSION
Developing a Team mission is just an extension of
their individual mission process. When you start
to develop any mission statement from groups, it
is important to not only discuss systems and
procedures the group uses, but also the unique
contribution that the group makes.
6OUR MISSION
Missions work best when they are grounded in the
past and project that past into the future. They
become more essential and inspiring when they
focus less on what you do, and more on what you
will do in the future and how it will effect the
recipients.
7And now, some questions
- What business is our lodge in?
- Who are the customers of the Lodge?
- What added value do the customers of the Lodge
receive? - What contribution is the Lodge making to the
Scouting program as a whole? - What is our lodge especially good at?
8Finally! OUR MISSION
The mission of the Lodge is to achieve the
purposes of the Order of the Arrow as an integral
part of the Boy Scouts of America in the Council,
through positive youth leadership under the
guidance of selected capable adults.
9This is the test
So IS THE LODGE ACCOMPLISHING ITS MISSION?
10The Purposes of the Order of the Arrow are
- To recognized those campers- Scouts and Scouters-
who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in
their daily lives and by such recognition, cause
other campers to conduct themselves in such a
manner as to warrant recognition. - To develop and maintain the camping traditions
and spirit.
11The Purposes of the Order of the Arrow are cont.
- To promote Scout camping, which reaches its
greatest effectiveness as part of the Units
camping program, both year round and in the
summer camp, as directed by the Council Camping
Committee. - To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness
into a life of purpose of leadership in cheerful
service to others.
12DEPARTMENT OF REDUNDENCY DEPARTMENT
So, once again IS THE LODGE ACCOMPLISHING ITS
MISSION?
13In a word Strategery
- A Roadmap to success includes 3 strategies
- MANAGE FOR THE MISSION
- KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE
- WALK LIKE YOU TALK
14MANAGE FOR THE MISSION
- Being committed to the aims and goals that the
group has set. - Commitment to these goals may have to supersede
outside diversions. - The leader must confer with members of his group
to set the goals. - Once the goals are set, it is their turn to begin
to lead the group (the goals). - The Group must continually ask How am I going
to get all these goals accomplished? - The Leader must always be managing for the
mission
15KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE
- The leader must set his sights on the goals the
group has set for itself. - The leader must be committed to reaching those
aims and must adjust his style to accomplish the
mission. - The vision of the group must not be blurred by
the leaders personal biases or agenda. - Success as a leader rests solely on his or her
ability to lead a group to the collective
objective. - You cannot be labeled a great lodge, in spite of
the best appearance or the leaders golden
tongue, if the group fails to meet the present
goals.
16WALK LIKE YOU TALK
- This means that you are not just committed to
attaining the ends which the group has set, but
that you will go about this in an honest and
straightforward fashion. - You have not only committed to manage for the
mission, but to set the best example that you can
for those who you are charged with leading. - Recognizing that trust is essential, it can only
be established if the leader is honest and Walks
like he talks
17LIVE IT!
It is the hope and intent of the Key-3, that the
LEC, and all Lodge Leaders (everyone in this
room) will be as committed as we are to the
Lodge, the OA, and the Mission. When we Manage
for the Mission, our structures, and everything
we do individually and collectively as Arrowmen,
will relate to our aims and objectives, or
mission and purpose.
18LIVE IT!
Because of that un-obscured focus, KEEPING OUR
EYES constantly on THE MISSION, we are much
more likely to WALK LIKE WE TALK, to practice
what we preach, and we are much more likely to
lead a lodge that fulfills THE MISSION, in the
eyes of the Council and the BSA. If we LIVE IT
together, we can achieve it together.
