The Overall Program
5
The SpaceOps 2010 Theme
Delivering on the Dream
  • Delivering on the Dream is intended to
    communicate a feeling of sequence.
  • First we had a dream, then we did hard work, then
    we delivered the results.
  • Like delivering on the bet, delivering on the
    promise, delivering on the dream.
  • The SpaceOps conference is all about operations.
There are many critical phases of a spaceflight
    mission, including concept development,
    requirements, design, development,
implementation, etc. But Operations is the
culminating phase of a mission, and it is the
phase where all the promise of the previous
phases come to fruition. Operations is truly the
phase where the mission teams finally deliver on
    the dream.

6
SpaceOps 2010 Logo Development
  • AIAA and planning committee are working together
to develop a logo specific to the 2010
    conference.
  • Logo finalized and selection anticipated in
    November.
  • Will use new logo on conference materials,
    including website.
  • NASA is promoting the distribution of SpaceOps
2010 lapel pins, but this has not yet been
    coordinated with AIAA.

7
Space Act Agreement Update
  • The Space Act Agreement will be the formal
agreement between NASA MSFC and AIAA for the
hosting and organization of the conference. It
    will outline roles and responsibilities.
  • AIAA has reviewed and submitted
questions/comments back to NASA Marshall Space
    Flight Center.
  • Concurrently proceeding through internal router
at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.
  • Conference implementation plan
  • Was useful for SpaceOps 2008 to coordinate the
    multiple organizatioal entities (ESA, EUMETSAT,
    AIAA)
  • Because all 2010 conference organization is being
done by AIAA, it is not clear whether an
implementation plan is as useful for 2010 as it
    was for 2008
  • NASA has developed a draft, but is keeping
options open as to whether to put further effort
    into it.

Preliminary Program Schedule
10
Notable items for program schedule
  • Conference runs late on Tuesday (for electronic
poster sessions), ends early on Wednesday (for
    Jack Daniels tour)
  • Total Number of Oral Presentations
  • Assuming 6 session rooms 288
  • Assuming 7 session rooms 336
  • Plan for SpaceOps 2008 was 299 Oral Presentations
    in 6 session rooms
  • Breaking News patterned after IAC concept
  • Opening Ceremony for Exhibit Space
  • Electronic Interactive Poster Sessions
  • Normal closing time 5pm (Mon-Wed-Thur)
  • 2008 presenter had comment that nobody showed up
for his 5pm presentation consider earlier
closing time with fewer papers? (and associated
    reduction in registrations?)

11
A specific survey response issue
  • Several comments about wanting more than 20
    minutes per speaker.
  • 30-10-5 (45 minutes) would be a dramatic change.
  • Have feeling that some speakers would drone on
    and on over same material
  • 2010 decision currently is to hold with 20-5-5
  • In support of this, two survey responses
  • there was even the impression that there is too
    much time in some sessions
  • In some cases, but 30 min does not allow for
depth that's fine though for wetting appettite
    to read paper
  • Comments?

The Technical Program
28
Technical Program Schedule
  • Schedule follows combination of Heidelberg and
    Montreal plan
  • Generally, earlier dates than most SpaceOps
    confs
  • NASA plan, still to be negotiated with AIAA

29
Tracks, Sessions, Session rooms
  • There is often confusion about these items.
Clearly defining these for SpaceOps 2010
  • A track is a major discipline (ground systems,
    ops execution, etc.)
  • A session is a set of papers grouped under a
    session chair
  • Preferably with some subject material in common
    between them
  • There can be any number of sessions within a
    track
  • Although its not desirable, two sessions for one
large track can be going on in parallel
  • Whenever possible a track or session should be
scheduled in the same session room.
  • Session rooms may not map to tracks one-for-one
  • Large tracks may require parallel sessions
  • Unpopular, but alternative is to have session
room capacity drive selection rather than paper
    quality

30
Tracks, Sessions, Session Rooms
  • Ideally each track has a session room
  • Practically not possible Some tracks will share
rooms, some will have parallel sessions

31
Historical record of tracks
  • From 1994 to 2008 (8 conferences), these were the
most common tracks in SpaceOps conferences
    (Kearneys analysis)
  • Data Systems, Ground segment 7 conferences
  • Mission Planning 5 conferences
  • Mission Management 5 conferences
  • Operations Management 3 conferences
  • Cross Support, Interoperabilty, Standards 4
    conferences
  • Mission Experience 3 conferences

32
SpaceOps 2010 Tracks
  • The SpaceOps 2010 Tracks
  • Data Systems supporting Operations
  • Mission Execution Plan, Train and Fly
  • Mission Design and Mission Management
  • Cross Support, Interoperability, Standards
  • Launch Operations
  • Commercial Space Operations
  • Notes
  • The first four are intended to hit the most
    productive tracks from prior conferences.
  • The last two are the new initiatives for this
    conference.
  • Mission Experience and Lessons Learned
intended to be covered within these tracks (no
    special session for that).

33
SpaceOps 2010 Tracks
  • More Notes
  • Planning to put stronger emphasis on looking
    forward rather than looking back.
  • Stronger encouragement of manned spaceflight
    submissions
  • Still considering approach for academics
    (separate track/session, or mainstreamed
  • Attendees direct, via survey - input on
    additional sessions
  • SpaceOps Outreach
  • Ops certification processes
  • Approaches to remove/reduce Governmental
    restrictions on cross agency collaborations.
  • These changes are responsive to the SpaceOps 2008
    survey

34
Number of Session Rooms - Strategy
  • A number of survey responses said that there were
    too many parallel sessions.
  • SpaceOps 2010 is planning on even more, 6-7
    session rooms
  • Coupled with new topics (Launch Operations,
Commercial Operations, Academic topics) but new
topics may not bring overlapping interests
  • They bring new customers, not more rooms for the
    old customers
  • Alternative is reducing rooms ? reducing oral
    presentation slots ? reducing attendance.
  • This approach says at any given time, theres a
greater chance of an interesting pitch for any
    given attendee.
  • Relatively few responses complained about the
    number of parallel sessions.

35
Other Program Features
  • The plan for poster sessions supports two types
  • Electronic Interactive sessions
  • Electronic display supporting (for example)
    software demos
  • Depends on ability to find sponsor to supply
    displays
  • Traditional poster sessions
  • Publications MSFC has tentatively agreed to
produce another AIAA publication in the series
    Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics
  • Promoted by Publications committee chair
  • MSFC Editor will be Craig Cruzen
  • Contingent upon Craigs availability
  • May want to consider downsizing the book from
last time, with fewer papers in specific topic
    (or track) area.
  • Another suggestion from 2008 attendees
  • Career Board job listings
