The World AIDS DAY

The Initiatives of Hope is the primary mission
focus of the churches of the Virginia Conference.
It seeks to bring Gods hope and love to three
special fields of need Mozambique, Russia, and
Brazil. The inspiring partnership between the
United Methodist Church in Mozambique and
regional and national government leaders offers
hope to the 18 million citizens of this
developing African nation. 
In preparation for World AIDS Day 2006, Chicuque
Rural Hospital administrator, Jeremias Franca,
sent the following PowerPoint presentation.  CRH
is on the front line of AIDS in Mozambique. 
Please pray for the hospital staff and all those
infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Beginning of the Day
The Hospital was crouded with patients and staff.
The presentation had already been announced in
the communities throughout the week. Everyone was
anxious, and came.

A PLAY ABOUT AIDS
The presenting team integrated staff members who
are already HIV positive. They worked all week
long to prepare the communities for the
celebrations. It was a moment of reflection.

The day was a very sad one
...as the community remembered people like this
mom dying from AIDS, brothers and sisters that
have passed away, staff members that get infected
and affected daily, terminally ill people being
abandoned by the families. This strikes us all
the time. What has gone WRONG?

Some Facts about AIDS in Mozambique and Chicuque
in particular

• HIV/AIDS is prevalent in people ages 15 through
  49, mostly young women
  
• There are 500 new infections daily in Mozambique
• The prevalence rate is 16.4
• Chicuque has enrolled 1,652 HIV/AIDS patients
  since 2004
  
• 287 of these patients are already taking AIDS
  drugs

The community and the hospital must be safer
places
The community and staff stood for a minute of
silence, And then, vowed to fight AIDS at home,
on the road, at work and everywhere.
The staff vowed to make the hospital, a safer
hospital.
