Title: ICT Transition Project

1
ICT Transition Project
  • Christian Smith and Fiona Ford

2
Purpose
  • To develop stronger and more robust links between
    Primary and Secondary ICT Departments
  • To develop strategies for transferring ICT
    exemplar from Y6 to Y7
  • To allow KS3 teachers a clearer understanding of
what is happening in KS2 ICT

3
LEA ICT Transition Project Context
  • 2nd year
  • Based on feedback from year 1, more schools
involved and a variety of tasks developed (15 in
    total this year)
  • Schools able to develop materials further within
    agreed guidelines

4
Agreed guidelines
  • Any activity or unit of work should be self
contained but extendable, allow students to show
MORE than one aspect of ICT learning (eg,
    research, analysis and presentation or
researching, designing and evaluating) and should
have an outcome that can be transferred to
secondaries and be self or peer-evaluated in some
    way.

5
What sort of projects were done?
  • Chocolate bar design, WWII Website, About Me,
School Meals, Olympic Bid posters, Self-images,
Y6 Year Book, School Website, School news-desk
  • Examples of the overall planning is available on
    the CD-Rom in your packs

6
Who were involved?
  • A number of Primary and Secondary schools
expressed interest in the project, and schools
with ICT Lead Teachers were targeted as key.
  • In 2005/6 wed like as many schools as possible
to link up and be involved.

7
New Projects for 05/6
  • Video Jockey- creating video mood edits using
royalty free materials from the BBC
  • Virtual Museum- creating a museum from
resources including sound and image using
    presentation software
  • Online Portfolio

8
Working with LGFL
  • LGFL portals can provide opportunity for a
discussion area or example bank that students can
use in Y6 and access in Y7
  • Network Training with secondary schools will be
available in Spring 06 on how to develop these.
Alternatively, this could be a good use of Jo
    Dilworths project time

9
The 2005/6 Pilot
10
The 2005/6 Stage 2 Pilot
  • Stage 2 is expecting more schools to make contact
with each other and plan a transition unit
    into Y6.
  • Stage 2 expects more collaboration between
Primary and Secondary partners (even just a phone
    call or 1 hour visit)
  • More materials to choose from, but less
structured to allow schools to develop them to
    their own context.

11
Feedback from Pilots
12
Feedback was generally positive
  • It was felt that the project allowed assessment
to be made on the full PoS rather than the most
    recent aspect.
  • Secondaries who had students who undertook the
pilot noticed more confidence in the use of ICT
  • The ability to see examples of work, was greatly
anticipated, but issues with the physical
    transfer became apparent
  • The visits to and by Secondary teachers were felt
to be of great value for the primaries AND for
the secondary teacher who saw students

13
There were issues..
  • Transfer of physical exemplar was still an issue
  • As was the discontinuity between some cohorts
  • The materials came out too late for planning
  • Schools wanted more moderation time before they
handed over exemplars These are aspects being
    planned for support this year

14
Expectations
  • Students in Y6 will produce a unit of work that
shows their ICT to their best
  • Secondary partners create an LGFL area where
materials can be stored between Y6 and Y7.
  • More visits and discussion between Secondary and
    Primary partners during summer 2006.
  • Staff and students enjoy the units!

15
The Materials
  • 15 Web based examples of units from 2004/5 pilot
  • Easy to add to
  • Provided in Word (.doc) format
  • Includes resources

16
Example projects from 04/5
  • A Y6 web based year book including video
    messages
  • Developing Self Image using digital images and
    poetry
  • Researching and Creating a New Chocolate Bar
    packaging
  • Web pals- talking to Y7 students through LGFL
    message boards
  • 2012 Olympic Games- many resources are now
    available through the LGFL

17
How do we get involved?
18
  • CD-Rom Materials are in the Conference Delegate
    Packs
  • Identify where and which unit to plan into your
Scheme of Work (at the end of y6 AND the start of
    Y7)
  • Contact partner schools to arrange reciprocal
    visits
  • Think about how to transfer the examples
  • Contact the ICT Consultants to see how they can
    support and liase.
  • Keep watching the transition area of the LBWF
    LGFL portal.

19
Traning
  • Regular Network meetings with Transition as a
focus 16th Nov (twilight) and 3rd March
    (twilight)
  • Building a School Portfolio 19th October
    (twilight)
