MARC Defined
  • MARC is the acronym for Machine Readable
Cataloging. The term refers to the record
syntax, the code, labels and standards required
for creating records that can be used in
    computerized library management systems.
  • Machine-readable means a computer can read and
    interpret the records.

Bibliographic Control
  • Libraries collect materials to satisfy the
    educational, informational and recreational
    information needs of their constituents.
  • MARC helps in the organization of materials so
that people and library materials can get
    together. MARC organizes bibliographic information

6
Cataloging Rules
  • Cataloging rules tell the cataloger the
standardized rules for describing items and
    establishing headings. Marc rules tell
catalogers where to put their work so that
computer catalogs can store, retrieve and display
    the data.
  • Marc is a standard for representing data in the
    computer

MARC21
  • Marc21 is the current standard. The 21 means the
    21st century.
  • Not all Marc formats are the same. Also names
    have changed over the years.
  • LCMarc (1960s) USMarc (1980s) Marc21 (2000)
  • CANMarc (1970s) Marc21 (2000)
  • UKMarc will soon be the same as Marc21 (2000)
  • CAN is for Canadian and UK is for the United
    Kingdom

9
Other MARC Versions
  • UNIMarc, IberMarc, NORMarc and other national
versions a still not quite the same as Marc21.
Records created using these formats will need to
be translated for use in systems that use Marc21.
  • MicroLif was used for early PC based library
automation systems. It was smaller version of
Marc that was used by vendors such as Follet and
Winnebago. The current version MicroLif91 is
    compatible with Marc21.

10
Types of Records
  • Bibliographic records provide the descriptions,
    headings, and other bibliographic information.
  • Authority records establish headings and cross
references and are used for authority control.
  • Holding records Information about individual
items (bar codes, volume numbers, copy
information) and in systems which library has the
    item

11
Types of Records 2
  • Each of these types of records is required to
    keep track of each item.
  • Not every library provides authority records.
  • You may never see a holdings record because many
systems add the information to the bibliographic
records in their own internally defined fields.
Because of lack of standards libraries are
beginning to require MARC compatible holdings
    records.

12
Reasons for using Marc
  • Sharing of records. You dont have to make
    original records.
  • Sharing of resources. Groups of libraries can
make union catalogs. Interlibrary loans are
    easier.
  • Marc is a standard. Library automation systems
    are designed around Marc standards
  • Marc is easy to learn

13
Definitions
  • Fields Start of field is indicated with a three
digit number from 100 to 999. A Marc field is the
entire string of information. Some fields are
    repeatable some are not.
  • Subfield is a part of a field.
  • Marc indicator is a one digit code, which can be
a blank or number that gives the system special
instructions. It comes after the field code.
  • A subfield delimiter is a special character that
tells the system what follows is a subfield. The
tags (letters a-z and numerals 0-9) mean
    different things for different fields.
