3Life of Pi Illustration Competition
How does the novel invite illustration?1. I
wish I could convey the perfection of a seal
slipping into water or a spider monkey swinging
from point to point or a lion merely turning its
head. But language founders in such seas.
Better to picture it in your head if you want to
feel it. (Chap. 4 pg. 16). 2. As a child I
devoured the comic books of the Ramayana and the
Mahabharata and an illustrated childrens Bible
and other stories of the Gods (Chap. 23
pg.72-73).3. Strange as it might sound, it
was only after a long time that I looked to see
what was happening in the lifeboat. The hyena
had attacked the zebra. Its mouth was bright red
and it was chewing on a piece of hide. My eyes
automatically searched for the wound, for the
area under attack. I gasped with horror. . .
.I turned my eyes to the horizon again.
(Chap. 45 pg. 133).

19Winner of the Canongates Life of Pi illustration
contest Tomislav Torjanac
My vision of the illustrated edition of Life of
Pi is based on paintings from a first person's
perspective -- Pi's perspective. The
interpretation of what Pi sees is intermeshed
with what he feels and it is shown through use of
colours, perspective, symbols, hand gestures,
etc. The idea behind this approach is a kind of
an extension of Mr. Martel's idea as expressed in
this quote "It seemed natural that Mr. Patel's
story should be told mostly in the first person
-- in his voice and through his eyes. But any
inaccuracies or mistakes are mine." ' (Tomislav
Torjanac, Canongate Publishers website)
20- My illustration is called There Goes Our
Lunch. It shows the Japanese investigators who
interview Pi in a Mexican hospital after his
rescue. This scene gave me the chance to include
symbolic objects the tape recorder, the IV drip
and to create the atmosphere of a small room,
where the viewer is in the position of Pi
himself. - I first read Life of Pi a while ago. It was very
important to me I discussed it with my
girlfriend for a long time. It made me think
about how we interpret our own reality (Tomislav
Torjanac, Times Feb. 18 2006).
