Brain Teasers
  • What is the general purpose of a sales speech?
  • Why must you believe in your product?
  • How can you get your audience to want your
    product?
  • Why should you demonstrate the product?
  • How do you handle questions from the audience?

10
To get a complete illustration
  • To make a good sales speech you should develop a
really complete description of your product.
  • Brainstorm a list of adjectives that apply to
    your product.
  • In doing this, think of how sales-people would
    describe the product to you.
  • Remember to never describe your product in a way
    that is negative.

11
Why would you sell this? List
  • List reasons (as many as you can think of) this
product would be useful to the customer.
  • Needs product would meet for the general public.
    (Vacation would provide customer relaxation,
exploration, meeting new people, new things, be
    pampered, etc)
  • More reasons you have that your product is GREAT
and needs are met, the more you will sell!

12
How can you get your audience to want your
product?
  • Tell your audience why they need the product
  • Use motive appeals
  • What can the product do for them?
  • How can they use it?
  • Why will life be better for them because of this
    product?
  • Show that you use and believe in the product.
  • Show how sincere you are.
  • How has it helped you?

13
Why should you demonstrate the product?
  • Know your product thoroughly
  • How does it work?
  • Of what is it made?
  • In what colors does it come?
  • What are its special features?
  • Is there a guarantee?
  • What is the cost?
  • Can it be repaired?
  • Why is it better than a similar product
    manufactured by a different company?
  • Is there only a limited number available?

14
What other facts should you say about the product?
  • Make it easy to buy
  • State the price and where the audience can buy
    your commodity
  • Is there a down payment?
  • Installment plan?
  • Can they get a discount on a trade-in?
  • Is there an inducement such as a special price or
    a free gift?
  • Can they buy right now the article you are
    demonstrating?
  • Can they order it online?

15
How do you handle questions from the audience?
  • After speech is done, ask if there are any
    questions
  • Repeat the question an audience member asks (so
everyone can hear it), then answer it to the best
    of your ability.
  • If you do not know the answer, politely state so
and tell the questioner where the information may
be found or say that you will find it and report
back within a day or two.
  • Be courteous.

16
After the Questions
  • You may want to hand out samples during this time
  • After questions are done, state one or two
sentences to finalize your speech in which you
ask the audience to try to buy your product.

17
Persuasive techniques
  • Added to the rubric is the ability to use the
    persuasive techniques discussed today.
  • Aristotle felt there were two different types of
    rhetoric
  • Artistic logos, ethos, pathos being used in a
public forum for persuading a crowd.
  • Non-artistic laws, witnesses, contracts,
    torture, oaths

18
Artistic rhetoric (persuasion)
  • Logos Logical arguments based on steps of
    reasoning
  • you can persuade people by logically thinking
though the issue and countering their arguments.
  • - often times people are persuaded by logical
    fallacies (misused logic)
  • bandwagon fallacy everyone is doing it
  • either-or thinking America love it or leave it
  • non sequitur (does not follow) If we can fly to
the moon we should be able to find a cure for
    cancer.

19
Artistic rhetoric (persuasion)
  • Ethos The argument is based on the character or
ethics of the speaker. Are they believable,
    honest do they have integrity?
  • if the speaker truly is an honorable person
then they should be believable and want the best
    for everyone.
  • - what if the speaker is lying or has other
intentions that the people dont know about?

20
Artistic rhetoric (persuasion)
  • Pathos The argument appeals to the
    passions/emotions of the audience.
  • If the speaker is passionate about the topic,
then they must believe in it enough for the
audience to be convinced as well.
  • - Any good actor can act passionately about
something they really dont care about.

21
