Eight Steps to Perform Basic Life Support
  • 1. Check victims responsiveness
  • 2. Call 9-1-1
  • 3. Open airway
  • 4. Check breathing
  • 5. Check circulation
  • 6. Perform CPR
  • 7. Recheck circulation
  • 8. Perform rescue procedures based on findings

Check Responsiveness
  • Tap victim on shoulder and ask Are you okay?
  • DO NOT shake victim

Activate EMS
  • If victim is unresponsive, activate EMS
    immediately
  • Instruct a bystander to call
  • If you are alone, you must activate EMS before
    performing any other step

Position Victim
  • If unresponsive victim is breathing, place in
    recovery position
  • If uncertain if victim is breathing, roll victim
    over onto his or her back
  • Keep head, neck, and shoulders aligned
  • Victim must be on firm, flat surface

Open the Airway
  • Tilt the head and lift the chin
  • Remove any visible objects from mouth
  • If victim has possible spinal injury, use jaw
    thrust without a head tilt

Check for Breathing
  • Look, listen, and feel for breathing

Perform Rescue Breathing
  • Mouth-to-mouth method
  • 1. Make certain airway is open
  • 2. Pinch victims nostrils
  • 3. Take a deep breath
  • 4. Make a tight seal with your mouth around
    victims

  • 5. Slowly breath air into victims mouth until
    victims chest rises
  • 6. Remove your mouth to let the air come out and
    turn your head away
  • 7. Repeat one more breath

Check for Signs of Circulation
  • After giving two rescue breaths, check for signs
    of circulation
  • Pulse
  • Breathing
  • Coughing
  • Movement
  • Normal skin condition

Rates
  • Adult rescue breathing 1 breath/5 seconds
  • Child rescue breathing 1 breath/3 seconds
  • Keep hand on forehead
  • Infant rescue breathing 1 breath/3 seconds
  • Keep hand on forehead

Infant Basic Life Support
  • 1. Check responsiveness
  • 2. Activate EMS
  • If alone, call after 1 minute of resuscitation
  • 3. Open airway
  • 4. Check for breathing for 10 seconds

  • 5. If not breathing, give two slow breaths
  • Place your mouth over victims mouth and nose, or
    nose only
  • Give 2 slow breaths

  • Watch chest to see if breaths go in
  • Allow chest to deflate after each breath
  • If breaths do not go in
  • Re-tilt head and try again

  • 6. Check for signs of circulation for 10 seconds
  • 7. If no breathing, but there is a pulse
  • Give 1 breath every 3 seconds
  • Recheck signs of circulation every minute
