  • Ending December 18
  • Spring Semester
  • Beginning in January
  • Ending May 18

6
Definition of Volunteer Service
  • Must be volunteered
  • Done for no pay
  • Done for no credit
  • Must be of service to someone or some
    not-for-profit group or event

7
How to Find an Opportunity to Volunteer
  • SESA Bulletin Board
  • Become involved in an ICC student organization or
    committee
  • Your hometown service events
  • Read the newspaper
  • Talk to people, including other SESA members

8
What is SESA?
  • Student Education and Service Ambassadors
  • A student organization on campus that helps
coordinate those who need volunteer help with
those who are willing to give their volunteer
    service.
  • Because you are receiving a scholarship that
requires a service component, you are
automatically a member of this student service
    organization.

9
How do you know an Opportunity will qualify?
  • It will automatically qualify if it was posted on
the SESA Bulletin Board or website.
  • It will generally qualify if it it came through
    the Student Activities office.
  • It will qualify if its not on the Bulletin
Board, but is pre-approved by Heather.

10
Are you already doing something that can count?
  • Possibly, if you are
  • A member of a student group and participate in
its executive sessions and planned events.
  • Tutoring someone
  • Others?

11
Are there restrictions?
  • Yes.
  • Activities are limited to 5 hours of any one
event or any one type of event. You may do more
than 5 hours, but only 5 of them will qualify.
  • There are four categories of activities and you
must have at least one hour in at least three of
the categories, but a maximum of 5 qualifying
hours in any of the four categories.

12
Are there other restrictions?
  • Yes.
  • You must complete 3 hours of career development,
5 hours of campus service, and 7 hours of
    community service.

13
How do I actually go through the process?
  • The 1st step is to decide that you will volunteer
your services for a particular event or activity.
  • If the event was found on a sign up sheet on the
bulletin board, then sign up and note whether you
will need to show up at the event at the
appointed time, or if someone will follow up with
you. If it does not say someone will follow up
with you, you are to just show up ready to go.
  • Or tear a section with the name and of who you
    call.
  • If necessary, gain pre-approval from Heather.

14
How do I actually go through the process?
  • The 2nd step is to call the contact person and
set up a time that you will provide your
    services.
  • NOTE The time may already be pre-set and not
flexible, or it may be arranged by you.
  • NOTE If you have an emergency and cannot keep
your commitment, call the event contact person
    directly, not Heather.

15
How do I actually go through the process?
  • Take a verification form with you to the event.
They are available on Heathers door, Room 303D,
or on the Student Activities counter, Room 305B,
    or on the SESA website.
  • Please remain for the entire time that you
committed to or that is needed by the event
    people.

16
How do I actually go through the process?
  • Then have your supervisor of the event sign and
    date it.
  • If you cant read the signature or phone ,
neither can Heather. Please print the name of
the person underneath his or her signature.

17
How do I actually go through the process?
  • Turn in the completed verification form to
Heather, either in her office or in the Student
    Activities office.
  • NOTE Heather keeps the forms in a file. You
are encouraged to make a copy of your forms for
    your own records.

18
How do I verify how many hours I have done each
semester?
  • In the middle of each month (beginning with
September and February of each semester), Heather
will send you an update letter telling you what
is on file for the hours you have turned in so
    far.
  • When you have completed the 15 hours each
semester, you will receive a letter notifying you
    of that milestone.

19
Other Milestones to work for
  • If you complete 50 hours of service, you will
    receive a SESA T-shirt.
  • If you complete 100 hours of service, you will
receive a plaque at the recognition evening at
    the end of the year.

20
Are there some sources that always need
volunteers?
  • YES!
  • ICC events and programs
  • ICC Student Groups
  • The HELP Lab is always looking for tutors in
    various subject areas.
  • American Red Cross

21
D.E.T.A.I.L.S.
  • Also known as a development transcript...
  • D.E.T.A.I.L.S. is an activity transcript that
provides a way to document your non-academic
    activities.
  • Done by Heather when you request it (it is not
done automatically when you request your academic
    transcript--they are unrelated).
  • Information is taken from your verification forms
    (incentive to do them correctly!).

22
What is the Verification Form?
  • It is the full-sheet form on colored paper that
you will use to record the volunteer activities
    you are doing.
  • It can be found on the SESA website, Heathers
door (303D), or on the counter in the Student
    Activities office (305B).
  • Please refer to the hand-out.

23
Dont forget to turn your form in to Heather!
  • Turn in your completed forms to Heather directly
or slide them under her door (Room 303D), or turn
them in at the Student Activities office (Room
    305B).

24
Where to Get More Information
  • Heathers office, Room 303D ph. 694-5494
  • Student Activities office, Room 305B
  • SESA Bulletin Board, outside Room 303D

25
What if you cant get the hours done?
  • Do not ignore it if you are struggling Heather
can help you work it out if you let her.
  • We have been able to help every student complete
his or her requirement who wanted to complete it.
We have confidence that this streak will
    continue.

26
What if I already have my hours done?
  • Make sure all of your forms have been turned in
and that you have received the confirmation
    letter from Heather.
  • You can continue to give of yourself and turn in
the formsyou no longer have to worry about what
    qualifies.
  • However, you still must wait until the next
semester to begin doing your service for that
    semester.

27
Summary
  • You must complete at least 15 hours of volunteer
    service per semester.
  • There are many ways to accomplish this.
  • Complete a verification form each time you do
some volunteer activity and turn it in.
  • When appropriate, request a DETAILS transcript.
  • If you have questions or problems, CALL or STOP
BY Heathers office, 694-5494, Room 303D.
