In the 1950s televisions were really rare.
Hardly anyone had one. They were expensive
relatively and cost the equivalent of about
5000! Most people remembered watching the
Queens coronation in 1953 or the Kings funeral.
TVs were black and white and had no remote
control . This didnt matter because there was
only one channel anyway , BBC1. In 1955 ITV1 came
out and it had adverts. More people had money to
buy what was on offer. Colour TV started in 1961
, but most people didnt get one until the
1970s. TV use grew and grew. In 1967 , BBC2 came
out. In 1981 , channel 4 started. In the 1980s
and 90s satellite and cable TV became popular
until now , life is dominated by TV. Many people
have lots of TVs in their homes. Children have
TVs in their bedrooms. At first TV stopped at
midnight , but now its on all day everyday!
There are remote controls , TVs are huge and
interactive TV is more popular.

Communication.

Kitchen.

• Microwaves were very very big and now they are
  very compact. People used to have to hand dry
  clothes but now there's a washing machine to do
  it for you. People had coal burners and now
  people have cookers. Now there are lots more
  modern gadgets in the kitchen that can do all the
  work for you. Everything needed cooking in the
  old days and now you can get ready meals.

Music.
Entertainment

• There has been lots of types of music since 1948
  such as jazz and rock , the main singers and
  bands were the Beatles , Elvis Presley and the
  Rolling Stones. Banjos were very popular in the
  50s and in the 1960s and 70s guitars took over.
  Concerts were on all the time in the 60s and 70s.
  Now music is better and instruments are a lot
  louder.

Radio.

• Radios were a lot bigger than all the modern
  radios they were about 42cm by 32cm. They looked
  horrible. Radios had lots of stations and some of
  them them didnt work.

Computers.
Entertainment

• Computers were in black and white and they were
  very big.Computers didnt have the internet until
  1995 and people got the internet at home in 2000
  and 2001 Most people first went on a computer at
  school.
