Introduction
  • Committee for the Promotion of public Awareness
    and Development Studies (COPPADES) is an NGO
    working in the field of computer and ICTs
    education and services in rural areas in Nepal
  • BCICT focuses on government schools and community
    people
  • Standardizes the quality of education by adding
    Computer and ICT on traditional education
  • Contribute to bridging the digital divide

Introduction
  • Has launched ICT program Phase wise
  • Has launched phase I program at 2000
  • Phase I program covered students of 65 schools
    and community people around schools of 8
    districts namely Bardia, Bajura, Dhading,
    Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahau , Rolpa, Solukhumbu
  • About 20,000 students and 8,000 community people
    learned IT education after phase I program

  • Phase II included 80 schools and community people
    of 22 Districts
  • With an objective to reach to 20,000 students and
    10,000 community people with computer and IT
    education
  • Phase III program included 80 schools and phase
    IV included 165 rural schools and communities
    across the country

  • The importance of information and communication
    technology (ICT) has increased remarkably during
    the last few years.
  • Access to information and knowledge is essential
    for the marginalized and poor people to improve
    their lives and the lives of their children
  • In the context of Nepal only few rural people can
    have access to IT

  • The difference between the people who have access
    to IT and who do not is increasing day by day
  • It is necessary to reduce the gap
  • COPPADES is making contributions to reduce such
    gap

  • COPPADES realizes the potential of information

    reduce poverty and empower people
  • By the use of IT student can access distant study
    materials, news and information via the Internet
    and can update their knowledge which contributes
    to sustainable development

What does COPPADES DO ?
  • Announce the schools to join the BCICT project
  • Carry out technical feasibility of the schools
  • Provide training on hardware and software for one
    teacher of each school who lives in the same
    community where school is located so that he can
    assist other community people and youths besides
    school students
  • Provide five (5) computers to each school with
    printer, network cards, modem and LAN Cable and
    HUB
  • Provides follow up and support to partner
    schools

Achievement of Schools
  • Establish IT infrastructure in their schools. It
    is a revolution in the field of information
    technology
  • Most schools run academic courses for 9,10,11,12
    and some run non academic courses i.e. short term
    courses
  • Schools access Internet and email
  • Almost all the schools conduct their official
    work i.e. record keeping, printing official
    documents with the use of computers
  • Some schools operate computers with solar energy
    and also diesel generators where other energy
    alternatives are not available

Problems and difficulties
  • Government TAX
  • Political unrest
  • Unstable Government
  • Lack of funds for poor schools
  • Lack of electricity supply
  • Lack of quality telephony for Internet access

Roles of Government, NGO and INGO
  • The NGO and INGO should lobby government
  • To make policy to conduct ICT education to all
    schools
  • To make policy for increasing the availability
    of information and knowledge on ICT for
    development and empowerment
  • Should invest time and resources to IT Education
    in rural areas

    essential for improving lives, reduce poverty and
