Title: TITUS 1:5-9

1
  • TITUS 15-9

2
  • 5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you
should set in order the things that are lacking,
and appoint elders in every city as I commanded
    you
  • 6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife,
having faithful children not accused of
    dissipation or insubordination.
  • 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of
God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not
given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,

3
  • 8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good,
    sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled,
  • 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been
taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine,
both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

4
  • 5 For this reason I (PAUL) left you (TITUS) in
    Crete,
  • that you should set in order the things that are
lacking, and appoint elders in every city
    as I commanded you
    (What
    was lacking?)
  • a. Elders- vs 12.
  • b. Someone to stop doctrinal deception in the
    Body- vs 110-16.
  • c. Instruction for the older men and older
    women in doctrine- vs 22-3.
  • d. Instruction for the younger men- vs 26.
  • e. Servants- vs 29

5
  • f. Teaching believers their position and
    corresponding walk in good works-
    vs 211- 311.
  • 1 ELDERS
  • 6 if a man is blameless,
    the husband
    of one wife,
having faithful children not accused of
    dissipation or insubordination.
  • 7 For a bishop/overseer/Elder must be blameless,
    as a steward of God,

    not self-willed,

    not quick-tempered,
    not given
    to wine,

6
  • not violent,

    not greedy for money,
  • 8 but hospitable,
    a lover of what
    is good,
    sober-minded,

    just,

    holy,

    self-controlled,
  • 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been
taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine,
both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

7
  • Titus 19-16

8
  • 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been
taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine,
both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
  • 1. First an Elder is to be taught the faithful
    word.
  • a. He is to be taught in such a way, that he
can exhort and convict those who believe and
teach something different then the truth.
  • b. as he has been taught, comes 1st in the
    sentence for importance.
  • 2. Second once he is taught, then he is to
    hold fast to it.
  • 3. Third Doctrine is important. Without it the
church is weak and easily mislead.

9
  • How is an elder to be taught the faithful word?
  • By osmosis, putting the bible under his pillow at
    night?
  • By the fisherman strategy We catch them God
    cleans them?
  • By the theological view, that justification will
always produce sanctification and we just need to
give God time? Same as 2.
  • By a urgent and purposeful plan to get them from
point A to point B. Relying on the power of Gods
    Spirit to transform lives.

10
  • -All healthy churches have a well thought out
plan on how to get their people from A B.
  • -All healthy churches have discipleship
opportunities for those who desire to mature.
  • -All healthy churches set the bar at a high level
and expect their people to rise to the challenge.
  • -All healthy churches have clearly defined goals
on how to get there, in a way that the people can
    understand and clearly see.

11
  • 10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle
talkers and deceivers, especially those of the
    circumcision, 11 whose
mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole
households, teaching things which they ought not,
for the sake of dishonest gain.
    12
One of them, a prophet of their own, said,
Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy
    gluttons.
13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them
sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
    14
not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments
of men who turn from the truth.
    15 To the
pure all things are pure, but to those who are
defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure but even
their mind and conscience are defiled.

12
  • 16 They profess to know God, but in works they
deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and
    disqualified for every good work.
  • Lets break into these truths!
  • 10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle
talkers and deceivers, especially those of the
    circumcision, 11 whose
mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole
households, teaching things which they ought not,
for the sake of dishonest gain.
  • 1. First note that there are many, Paul has
warned of this before in Acts 2029-30.

13
  • 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all
the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made
you overseers, to shepherd the church of God
which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I
know this, that after my departure savage wolves
will come in among you, not sparing the flock

    30 Also from
among yourselves men will rise up, speaking
perverse things, to draw away the disciples after
themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that
for three years I did not cease to warn everyone
    night and day with tears.

14
  • -Someone who is Insubordinate Those who do not
place themselves under the authority of
    scripture.
  • -Someone who is an idle talker These are those
whose words are poison. They are those whose
words are not to be listened to.
  • -Someone who is a deceiver A teacher of lies.
All who are insubordinate/rebellious to the
teaching of the word, will eventually speak lies
that lead others and themselves astray!

15
  • Especially those of the circumcision
  • Acts 151 Now some men came down from Judea  and
began to teach the brothers, Unless you are
circumcised according to the custom of Moses,
    you cannot be saved.
  • Romans 101 Brothers and sisters, my hearts
desire and prayer to God on behalf of my fellow
Israelites is for their salvation. 102 For I can
testify that they are zealous for God, but their
zeal is not in line with the truth. 103 For
ignoring the righteousness that comes from God,
and seeking instead to establish their own
righteousness, they did not submit to Gods
righteousness. 104 For Christ is the end of the
law, with the result that there is righteousness
    for everyone who believes.

16
  • 2 Cor 31-18
  • Galatians
  • 11 whose mouths must be stopped,
  • who subvert whole households,
  • teaching things which they ought not,
  • for the sake of dishonest gain.

12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said,
Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy
    gluttons.
13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them
sharply, that they may be sound in the
    faith,

Why Must they be stopped?
Another trait of immoral men.
17
  • 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said,
Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy
    gluttons.
13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them
sharply, that they may be sound in the
    faith,

Paul uses one of their own poets to make a point,
to Cretanize meant to lie. Just like to
Corinthinize was to be immoral, sexually.
Who are them? It appears that those in Verse 10
are the them.
