- Forest Research and Education System in Brazil a
preliminary overview. - Symposium on
- Forest Research Education for the 21st Century
- Seoul, October, 2004
3- Introduction
- public interest for the preservation of tropical
forest has raised in the past 30 years while its
sustainable management has not been achieved - During this period, the research of forest
ecosystems had an amazing increment, but very
few of its results have been incorporated into
forestry praxis - This fact is partially due to the difficulty of
their transference to forest products users and
to people living in or near to the forested land
4- On the other hand, investigations on silviculture
have been seldom earmarked within government
policies or even were too academic to contribute
to solve practical problems.
5- Status of Forest Research and Education System in
Brazil
- 1. 70 research organizations

sectors - and 16 from the private forest sector

7- Most of the forest scientific production in
Brazil is produced by researchers from
Universities, - by researchers of Embrapa (Brazilian Agriculture
Research Corporation), and of State institutions
of Agricultural(Forest) Research - and some few specialized foundations and
non-governmental organizations - (IPEF/MCT, 2002).
-
8- It is important to notice that it is increasing
the number of technical and scientific
contributions generated by the in
non-governmental organizations and other
institutions that not deals exclusively in the
forestry or forest issues (IPEF/MCT, 2002). - It is also important the technical and scientific
contribution generated by researchers from the
private sector - (IPEF/MCT, 2002)

10- Actual stage and perspectives for the future
-
- Considering the scarcity of available
resources, the Brazilian Education and Forest
Research System must emphasize to the search of
bigger possible benefit toward all the society
and aiming at the future generations - the forest ecosystems have to be privileged,
searching the maintenance of its sustainability. -
11- Actual stage and perspectives for the future
-
-
- It is important to emphasize the recognition of
the good technical preparation of the Brazilian
professionals who act in education and in the
forest research, either in the public initiative
as in the private sector. -
12- Actual stage and perspectives for the future
-
- It also important to indicate high level of
existing integration between the institutions of
forest education and research and the companies
of the forest sector.
13- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 1. Conservation and
genetic improvement of genes of strategic
national forest species for the Brazilian forest
sector and society (forest genetic improvement,
with the development of genetic materials of high
quality directed toward the small producers, an
to provide the increasing demands of the forest
promotion) -
14- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 2.Development of systems of sustainable handling
for use of native forest in different ecosystems,
for alternative uses
15- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 3. Development of production systems and
sustainable management of planted forests,
emphasizing the species of fast growth and for
alternative uses -
16- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 4. Development of silvicultural and management
processes with the Identification of
environmental indicators for the monitoring of
the sustainability of forest management
procedures, for different time and space scales,
using the small watershed (micro basin) as unit
of planning
17- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 5. Development of agro forestry production
systems and its sustainable management,
emphasizing the alternative uses -
- 6. Development of systems for the forest
protection
18- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 7. Development of techniques for the best use of
the wood and the products of forest origin for
multiple uses, and with value aggregation
19- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 8.Development of systems and activities related
to the environmental quality with forest
components and interaction - (establishment of adequate forms of use of the
forest component for the sustainability of rural
activities technical information for the
restoration of degraded areas adequate systems
of managing residues of agricultural and urban
origin for the fertilization of forest
plantations environmental education
information and teaching on sustainable concepts
and principles, etc.) -
20- Priorities related to the Forest Development
- 9. Development of technologies for improvement of
the industrial processes of products and
by-products and residues diminishing production
of the forestry activities -
- 10. Development of Information and Forest Policy
Formulation System, for the agro forest business
development and for the forest development in
sustainable basis -
