WHAT IS A STANDARD?

• A standard because everybody uses it
• A proposed standard
• ie Same word, different meanings
• There is very little chance that any metadata
  standard will be universally used
• Tokens? There are now at least three different
  proposals for meta-metadata

PUBLIC RESOURCE DISCOVERY

• Catalog needs small hierarchical subject index
  (sound familiar?)
• Catalog must be tuneable based on usage
  monitoring
• Less is more

TECHNICAL/RESEARCH BASED

• Less hierarchical, many more pidgeon holes
• More like traditional catalogs
• The internet has tipped the balance so that the
  demand for catalogs is for public resource
  discovery
