Safe Cycling
  • Assembly Plan
  • Key Stage 2

Safe cycling
  • Today we are going to talk about how to enjoy
    yourself safely on your bike.
  • Pay attention because we are going to have a
    quick quiz at the end!

3
Safe cycling
  • Riding your bike is a great way of getting to
where you want to go. It keeps you fit and it is
    fun!
  • Can everybody who rides a bike put their hands
    up.

4
Safe cycling
  • We must remember that cycling is not only fun, it
is also a very important skill.
  • Cycling can be dangerous if we are not careful
    enough.

5
Being a safe cyclist
  • There are many things you can do to be a safe
cyclist, both before you set off and when you are
    riding.

6
Wear the right safety clothing
  • Wearing the right safety clothing when cycling is
    very important.
  • Can everybody who wears a helmet when they ride
their bike put their hands up?

7
Wear the right safety clothing
  • Woosh says

Well done to everybody who wears a helmet!
8
Wear the right safety clothing
  • Always wear a cycle helmet, even if you are not
    cycling on the road.
  • Cycling helmets protect your amazing brains!
  • Make sure your helmet fits you properly. It
should not cover your ears or eyes and it should
    fit securely.

9
Wear the right safety clothing
  • Your helmet should have a Safety Standard number
on it. Ask your parent or guardian to help you
    check this.
  • Clothing can also help make you more visible.
Wear bright clothes in the day and reflective
clothing at night so that other road users can
    see you.

10
Ride the right bike!
  • Riding a bike that is the right size for you and
making sure it is always in good condition is
    very important.
  • There is an easy way to tell if your bike is the
right size. You should be able to put both feet
on the floor at the same time when you are
    sitting in the saddle.

11
Keep your bike healthy!
  • Check that your tyres are not flat and that your
brakes work before you go anywhere.
  • Make sure that you have the right lighting as
well. By law, you must have a front light, a
back light and a red rear reflector on your
bicycle if you are cycling at night.

12
Plan your route
  • Plan your route before you go, using cycle paths
    as much as possible.
  • Make sure your parents or guardians know where
you are going and how long it will take you to
    get there.

13
Be a responsible road user
  • Try to use cycle paths wherever you can.
  • If you cannot use a cycle path, ride carefully on
the left-hand side of the road. Make sure that
vehicles can overtake you but do not ride too
    close to the pavement.
  • Always ride single file.

14
Be a responsible road user
  • Never ride with two people on a bicycle made for
    one.
  • Always keep both your hands on the handlebars
    unless you are signalling.
  • Avoid looking at car headlights straight on so
that you do not get dazzled.
  • Remember - you must not cycle on the road unless
    you have had training.

15
Concentrate
  • Always give the road your full concentration.
  • Never ride with a walkman or an MP3 player on.
  • Never use your mobile phone when you are cycling.
