Terminology

• Data providers
• Repository, where documents stored and exposed
  metadata for harvesting by service providers
• Service providers
• Harvests metadata and provides search interface
  of harvested data
• Open Archive Initiative (OAI) defines a standard
  open interface between data providers and service
  providers

• Personal data providers (archivelets) based on
  OAI
• Self-contained, self-installing software package
  that easily allows a researchers to create and
  maintain a small, OAI-compliant archive
• Downloadable, platform independent
• Uses native file system to store objects

  conveniently and under their control.

  Geological Survey (USGS), Old Dominion University

Arc - harvester

• Arc (http//arc.cs.odu.edu) is the first
  federated search service based on the OAI-PMH
  protocol.
• It includes a harvester which can harvests
  OAI-PMH 1.x and OAI-PMH 2.0 compliant
  repositories
• A basic search engine which is based on database
  and an OAI-PMH
