7How-To 22X 22 Columns Build a Base of Crushed
stone in accordance with the information provided
in the Maytrx Brochure or on the web at
maytrx.com. The Maytrx Corner Kit provides
everything needed for a 4 high Column with
enough material to place one course below ground.
If the columns are to be lighted make provisions
for conduit pipe or wire according to local
building code at this time. Place the stones as
illustrated above in First Course using a
square and level to insure the first course is
level, plum and square. Once the first course is
complete, each subsequent course will be laid
alternating the pattern of First Course and
Second Course. Use a level inside the column in
the hole formed for wire access to check for
plum. The Maytrx Column Kit includes 9 sets
(courses) of 6 stones that will produce a 4
column and burry one course in the ground for
stability. It is suggested SRW pavingstone
adhesive be used on edges where the stones meet,
be careful not to allow adhesive to be viewed
from the face of the stone. Â Â
8Basic Instructions
- If your project requires columns higher than 4
purchase additional Column kits. The Kit includes
36 pieces (8 pieces per ft of 22x 22 Column).
Maytrx Column Block are not normally compatible
in a wall with Maytrx 6 Block but may be used as
a column in a wall. - Note Maytrx Block are 10 deep, Column Block are
8 deep, both stones are 6 high. Use the
Illustration below as a guide when building low
or freestanding walls that have an integrated
Column that you wish to make utilizing the Column
Block Kit. Please consult a licensed Professional
on any Retaining walls that exceed 30 (see
Maytrx guidelines at maytrx.com). - A 22x 22 Column (Pilaster) can be built by
cutting the column block on every other row to
integrate with the wall. See the Illustrations in
the pages that follow for instructions. - WARNING Retaining Walls over 30 require the
services of a Licensed Engineer Please read the
basic Installation directions at maytrx.com.
9FIRST COURSE (CUTS)
Column in Wall (intigrated)
Cut Column Block Here
On this course cut two column block to 8 long,
This is all that is needed. This course will be
repeated every other course.
SECOND COURSE (CUTS)
On this course 2 stones are cut to 4 long shown
in yellow above. This is all that is needed. This
course will be repeated every other course.
10FIRST COURSE (CUTS)
Cut Column Block Here
On this course cut one column block to 8 long,
Cut a Second Column Block to 4 Long This is all
that is needed. This course will be repeated
every other course.
SECOND COURSE (CUTS)
On this course 2 stones are cut to 4 long shown
in yellow above. This is all that is needed. This
course will be repeated every other course.
11Cut 2 from the 14 Column Stone
By adding 4 additional stones cut at 12 to
provide smooth sides we create a large Column by
using the Basic Column Kit.
1226x 28 x 3 Column Cap made with Maytrx Cap
Stones The 26x 26 Cap can be made from 9
Maytrx Cap stones. Each stone will have a
finished size of 8.3x8.3 by using a combination
of splitting or cutting each stone. The stones
are made in three different patterns. It is
suggested that all stones be glued in final
position Top Cap An optional finish Top Cap can
be made with 4 Maytrx Cap stones. Each stone will
have a finished size of 10 x 10 by using a
combination of splitting and cutting each stone.
13Additional Options for Column Cap and Top The
drawings below depict a Arc Cap used to form a
Column Top. There are various products available
to finish a Column including Natural Stone and
many Precast products. There should be a reveal
(distance of Cap overhang) that depends on the
width of the column. The Column Built with the
Maytrx Column Kit is 22X 22 and anywhere from
1.5 to 2 reveal seams best. That means the
outside dimension of your column Cap should be
between 25x25 and 26x26 (221.51.525),
(222226)
Additional Details The Cap of the Column may be
enriched by adding another layer of Maytrx Cap
Stones to increase the height of the Cap
Treatment. Note this illustration uses
contrasting colors to show detail.

23Olde English Wall is easy to use as a
freestanding column. After building the base to
recommended specifications lay the stones as
shown below. The Cobble stones laid in this
pattern will make a 20x20 column without
cutting. Each course should overlap the vertical
joints from the stones below (see typical second
course below).

24- Installation Recommendations
-
- 30" maximum wall height with 3" below grade for
retained situations or consult a licensed
professional engineer for your particular
application. - Base should be 14"-16" wide by 6" deep and well
compacted. - For base and backfill, use multiple sized crushed
stone ranging from 1/4" - 1 1/2" in size with
less than 10 fines. - Lay a flexible drain pipe the length of the wall
to relive hydrostatic water pressure from
building up behind a retaining wall. (see
illustration below). - Offset vertical joints of units to maximize wall
strength. (see A below) - When stones are stacked vertically on 4" side,
another stone should be placed behind it to
create an 8" wall thickness. (see B below) - Vertical stones exposing the 4 face should
protrude the full 12 toward the bank in
retaining wall situations (see C below) - Filter fabric can be used to separate clean
gravel backfill from topsoil. - Consider using integrated columns or pilasters
for strength in free-standing and retaining
walls. (see picture in lower left below) - Use SRW masonry adhesive or equivalent to adhere
at least the top two rows.

34- Details of the Ledgestone Wall concept
- Â
- Possible to manufacturer on the Tiger, imprinting
on the Face as well as one side on some block for
premade corner block in the cube or removed
during tumbling. - Initial concept is to create a new wall system
that mimics the shapes of the paving stones, so
that a contractor that realizes the patterns
available to the pavers could use the same in a
wall. - No splitter needed.
- Ledgestone Wall would be available in Ledgestone
Texture as well as Barrel Tumbled. - Alternative Distressed on the face only (XT
style) - The block at 8" deep would be about 72 lbs per sq
ft (a 8x12 block would be 54 lbs, a 8x8 block
would be 32 lbs) - If corners were not an issue Armortech could be
used on the face..
