Bus Fumes
  • Bus exhaust fumes have sickened children
  • Caused breathing difficulties, respiratory
infections, and attacks of asthma and chronic
    bronchitis.
  • Children are breathing more fumes at their height
and lung capacity in and around the bus -waiting
    or walking near bus exhaust
  • Fumes have entered schools while buses idled
outside for an extended time period

4
Why Not Idle?
  • State or local restrictions
  • School district policies
  • A significant amount of fuel is wasted idling
    engines
  • If a bus idles on 100 cold days in a school year
for two hours per day for engine-preheat
    defrost
  • About 100 to 200 gal. of fuel would be idled
    away
  • Wasting 200 to 400 per year per bus IF fuel
    is 2 per gal.

SAFETY
  • Fuel-operated heaters
  • defrost windshields quickly to provide the driver
with a clear view of the road
  • provide additional heat while the bus is in
operation for warmer, more comfortable passengers
  • provide cleaner air for everyone to breathe

6
Fuel-Operated Heaters
  • Start automatically on a timer for engine
    pre-heat to eliminate cold starts
  • Eliminate unnecessary idling for heat and defrost
  • Reduce air pollution
  • Reduce fuel consumption
  • Reduce the amount of hours of operation on the
    vehicle engine
  • Reduce the frequency of oil changes and engine
    maintenance
  • Provide a warmer and safer interior compartment
    for driver and passenger
  • Are able to be used anywhere that the bus travels

all areas listed on the narrativelook at
    regional priorities for funding projects
  • Fair and open competitive process for projects
can be completed before or after application is
    submitted
  • Applications can be e-mailed or sent via express
delivery --UPS or FedEx -- not USPS mail, no
    hand delivery
  • Three Tiers of Evaluation
  • Tier 1Checked for completion of required
paperwork, within limit of funding, from
    eligible entity
  • Tier 2Reviewed and scored 0 to 100 by a team
  • Tier 3looks at diversity of geography, types of
    fleets and types of technology

More Money Coming . . .
  • Through fall and winter--
  • Normal EPA DERA funds available later in the
    yearnational and state level
  • Smaller fleets can go to their state
environmental or air quality groups to apply for
the state portion of EPA clean diesel funds.
Several states have special Clean School Bus
    programs.
  • State environmental agencies can combine funds
from various federal sources to fund additional
clean diesel projects to improve air quality
