Background
  • Victor Lowenfeld grew up in Austria where he
    enjoyed playing the violin and painting. As an
    adolescent, he joined the Zionist Movement to
    rebuild Palastine.
  • Victor Lowenfeld (1903-1960), was a pivotal
    person in art education. His theory of art
    development, which correlated with a childs
    chronological age, provided a structural
    assistance to art educators and therapists in
    understanding childrens art development (Muri,
    2002).
  • He believed that art expression contained
    evidence of the mental and emotional health of an
    individual.

Background
  • Lowenfeld synthesized many theories and
    approaches in developing his own theory the
    Expressionist Movement in art, Froebels and
    Cizeks approaches to teaching children,
  • Sullys investigation of scribbling, Luquets
    study of art development. Other people who
    influenced Lowenfeld were Buehler, Krotzsch,
    Riegel and Verworn.
  • Two people that Lowenfeld influenced were
    Benjamin Britain and Bernard Young.
