Logging into the Computer
  • You Must have a Teacher present the first time
    you log
  • in and set your password.
  • The first time you log in we will help you set a
    password.
  • Make sure the password is something simply that
    youll
  • remember each day.
  • Passwords are case-sensitive.

Setting Your Password
  • Type your first six letters of your last and the
    first
  • letter of your first name here.
  • Now click on OK to set your password.

  • Type a simple password that you will remember
  • each day in the New Password box.
  • Remember passwords are case-sensitive.
  • Now retype your passwords in the Confirm
  • New Password box.
  • Then click on OK

Terms to Remember
  • Username The name used to log on to the
    computer. On the virtual high school computers,
    you use your first and last name.
  • Password You must set up your password the first
    time you log onto the computer. On the virtual
    high school computers, you can set you password
    to be anything you want. 
  • Desktop The first screen you will see after you
    have logged on to the computer.
  •  Icon(s) Pictures that are placed on the desktop
    that represents a program on the computer. An
    icon is also referred to as a shortcut.
  •  Taskbar The gray bar across the bottom of the
    desktop. It is where you can find the start menu
    and any programs that are currently open.
  • Start Menu The start menu is where you can find
    all of the programs on the computer that are
    available.
  • My Documents A folder on the desktop that is
    used to save your work in. Folders can be created
    in My Documents to categorize your files.
  • Minimize, Maximize, and Close Use Minimize to
    send the folder or program to the Taskbar. Use
    Maximize to enlarge the size of the folder or
    program. Use Close to close the folder or
    program.

Terms to Remember
  • Program(s) Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint,
    Microsoft Excel, and Internet Explorer are all
    examples of programs. These programs are
    referred to as the software on the computer.
  • 3-½ floppy disk A portable device that you can
    save your work to. The size of a floppy disk is
    1.44 megabytes. This is the amount of storage
    space available on the disk. Floppy disks can be
    damaged by magnets, so keep away from cell phones
    or speakers. A floppy disk is considered
    hardware.
  • 3 ½ floppy drive Also referred to as the A
    drive on the computer. This is where you insert
    the floppy disk. This component of the computer
    is hardware.
  • Hard drive Also referred to as the C drive.
    This is where all programs and files are stored
    inside the computer. This component of the
    computer is hardware.
  • CD Rom Also referred to as the D drive. This
    runs your CDs and CD Rom disks. This component
    of the computer is hardware.

Saving Your Files
  • Open up the Microsoft Word program from the Start
    Menu.
  • Type the following
  • New Documents
  • Go to file
  • Select Save As
  • Name your file Saving Files
  • Click on My Documents
  • Then click save
  • Old Documents
  • Go to file
  • Select Save

Location Of Saved Files
  • The Save icon will save to the drive that you
    used last. Example if you opened the file from
    My Document, the file will be saved in My
    Documents. In order to change the saving
    location you must use Save As.
  • To save to the floppy disk you must select Save
    As, then change the location to 3-1/2
    Floppy (A)

Logging Off The Computer
  • Save all of your work to the My Documents folder
    and to your floppy disk.
  • Close all open programs.
  • Press Ctrl-Alt-Del.
  • Select Log Off, then click Yes.
  • If you dont log off, others will have access to
    you files.

Setting Up Hotmail
  • Double click the Internet Explorer icon on your
    desktop.
  • Click on Favorites, then MSN.COM.
  • Click on the link for Hotmail.
  • On the Left side of the screen you should see a
    box the reads Sign Up, Click There.

After clicking sign up
  • A window will open showing three (3) options.
  • MSN Hotmail
  • MSN Hotmail Plus
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Live
  • Click on the link that reads Get it Free.

On the next window
  • You will be ask to supply a e-mail address your
    e-mail address should the same as your username
    with _vhs after it.
  • Example My name is Bryan Meade. My username
    would be meadebr so my e-mail address should be
    meadebr_vhs.
  • For your password you can make it whatever you
    want just make sure you have a strong password.

  • MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION ON THE
    PREVIOUS TWO SLIDES!!

  • After you have set your e-mail address and
    password you can fill out the rest of the
    information on the page.
  • After you click I Accept another window should
    open. Scroll All the way to the bottom and click
    on continue and do the same on the page following
    that.
